Eminem is suing Facebook for copyright infringement (and it
May 22, 2013 2:43am | Fact Magazine

Things have got ugly between Eminem and social networking megacorp Facebook – and Dr. Dre’s been unwittingly dragged into the mess too.

As Billboard report, Eminem’s publishing company, Eight Mile Style LLC, has launched a lawsuit against Facebook over alleged copyright infringement. Eight Mile Style is claiming that the social networking site unlawfully copied a vintage Eminem track in an advert for its Facebook Home application. The advert, produced by ad agency Wieden + Kennedy in April, featured music with more than a passing resemblance to The Marshall Mathers LP track ‘Under The Influence’.

The lawsuit states that viewers of the video were quick to comment on the similarities, leading Facebook to hastily re-edit the advert – something the Eight Mile Style team holds up as an implicit admission of guilt. Despite removing the track, Facebook were still issued with a cease and desist order on the grounds that the company had no right to “alter the Eminem/D12 composition.”

The tone of the lawsuit gets increasingly vigorous from here on in, with Eight Mile Style alleging that Facebook and Wieden + Kennedy responded to their cease and desist with some flagrantly false counter-arguments, including the erroneous claim that Dr. Dre had produced the track – something the lawsuit claims is swiftly disproved by a “simple internet search&#822...

Jann Wenner Appoints 22-Year-Old Son, Gus, as RS.com's Head Honcho...
May 21, 2013 10:28pm | The Daily Swarm

Jann Wenner has appointed his 22-year-old son, Gus, as Rollingstone.com’s editor-in-chief. The new role for the young Wenner has drawn plenty of criticism, but Jann is quick to defend the decision. Via Adweek:

Was this appointment the plan all along?

I didn’t expect this. He was initially brought on to be an assistant to the chief digital officer [David Kang], and then David assigned him to this site redesign project. It

OK Computer was born a legend. Thom, Phil, Jonny, Ed, and Colin wrote an album that stood in the face of the classic rock that came before it and led the charge to all of the 21st century music that would come after it. It was born timeless, rooted in Brit-rock of the ’90s, but actually trying to climb on top of the cresting wave of technology. It would eventually topple all over Radiohead, and all of the mobiles quirking and chirping would inspire their 2000 album Kid A.

But in 1997, these 12 songs came unadulterated into the world, sad and lonely, angry and political, and, of course, paranoid. The guitars shimmered, Thom’s voice soared, and a Macintosh Text-to-Speak program got to sing lead vocals on “Fitter Happier”. Nothing sounded like it then, and nothing sounds like it now — 16 years later. Happy Birthday, OK Computer.

A Rational Conversation: Souls of Mischief On Their Vampire Weekend Connection and Why '93 'Til Infinity' Endures...
May 21, 2013 9:49pm | The Daily Swarm

From The Daily Swarm:

A Rational Conversation is a regular column by writer Eric Ducker where he gets on iChat or Gchat or Skype or whatever with a special guest to examine a subject that’s been on his mind.

Last week, Vampire Weekend released their third album, Modern Vampires of the City. One of the first songs from the album that the magpie-ish indie rock act premiered was “Step,” which lyrically references the title of a Run-DMC album and film, the city of Alameda, and inappropriately dressed punks at Astor Place in New York. It also borrows part of its chorus and thematic issues from “Step to My Girl,” a 1990s rarity by the Bay Area hip-hop group Souls of Mischief. Ducker got on the phone with Tajai of Souls of Mischief and the Hieroglyphics crew to get the story behind “Step to My Girl,” how Vampire Weekend came to use it, and the other unexpected places he’s heard his songs appear. Also last week, Souls of Mischief announced the summer-long Still Infinity Tour, which will commemorate the 20th anniversary of their debut ’93 'Til Infinity, and leads up to both a documentary about the landmark release and a new album due this fall.
