Youngblood Hawke @ Avalon: May 22, 2013
May 23, 2013 4:07pm | CMJ Youngblood Hawke – Photo by Annie Lesser Last night, indie-pop group Youngblood Hawke brought their catchy electro-jams to an amped-up Hollywood crowd at the Avalon. The enthusiastic five-piece kept their energy high even as the dry West Coast heat settled in on the venue, playing songs from their debut album, Wake Up. And with a little prodding from snappy tambourines and pounding drums, the audience did just that. Photos by Annie Lesser. The post Youngblood Hawke @ Avalon: May 22, 2013 appeared first on CMJ.

May 23, 2013 3:59pm | Brooklyn Vegan Titus Andronicus at House of Vans in 2012 (more by Ryan
Muir) Jersey rockers Titus Andronicus recently wrapped up their tour with The So So Glos (who have other dates), and though that tour didn't hit NYC, as mentioned, they're playing a free show on August 8 on Pier 84 with Ducktails as part of the River Rocks series. But you won't have to wait that long to see them in the NYC-area, because they're playing a show in their home state even sooner on July 14 at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. Tickets for the Maxwell's show are on sale now. Titus are currently over in Europe for Primavera Sound (which is streaming live) and a tour with Fucked Up. The two NYC-area dates are their only upcoming North American dates though. All dates are listed, along with a video, below... Mermaid Parade updates: Bowery benefit lineup expanded, 2013 king
& queen chosen & more
May 23, 2013 3:48pm | Brooklyn Vegan As mentioned, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade was in danger of not happening this year, due to new costly regulations and restrictions (and Hurricane Sandy). We posted already that Amanda Palmer is headlining a Save the Mermaid Parade benefit that's happening on Saturday (5/25) at Bowery Ballroom. Since we originally posted about it, the line-up of talent has expanded and now includes Mina Caputo (formerly Life of Agony singer Keith Caputo), Spanking Charlene, Beautiful Small Machines and a "rare guitar solo" from infamous film director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York). Tickets are $25 and still available. Meanwhile, the Save the Mermaid Parade Kickstarter is still kicking, currently at $83,486 of its $100,000 goal with 11 days to go. With things looking positive, the Mermaid Parade has announced its 2013 King and Queen: Judah Friedlander (who did a Save the Parade PSA) and Carole Radziwill (princess, journalist and Real Housewife of New York). This year's parade, assuming everything works out for them, will happen June 22 at 1 PM, beginning at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue. In other news, Weird Al Yankovic just announced that Amanda Palmer will guest on his new album. So there's something to look forward to. Continue reading "Mermaid ...

Tea Party Lawmaker a Pretty Crappy Beatmaker...
May 23, 2013 3:17pm | The Daily Swarm You may be somewhat surprised to hear that when he’s not underreporting his assets on campaign finance disclosure forms, Florida Tea Party Congressman Trey Radel is a hip hop producer. Not a very good one, mind you. Via Spin:
Listen to Broken Social Scene and Years
May 23, 2013 3:00pm | Cosequence Of Sound As previously reported, famed Canadian indie label Arts & Crafts is celebrating their 10th anniversary with X, a compilation of collaborations between bands on their roster. For their contribution, Broken Social Scene have teamed with avant-rocker Ohad Benchetrit (aka Years) for a track entitled, “Day Of The Kid”. Over the course of six minutes, the outfit lays down hushed vocal harmonies, muted guitars, and intermittent drums played with true deliberateness. And though the song never reaches some grand release, only moving from non-existent to slightly fragile, the methodical build is spellbinding in and of itself. [soundcloud url="http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/93577790%3Fsecret_token%3Ds-0hmt3" params="" width=" 100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] Arts & Crafts: X will be available May 28th on LP, CD, and digital formats. X Featured Artist List:
Charli XCX
May 23, 2013 2:55pm | StereoGum True Romance, the excellent debut album from the British pop singer Charli XCX, is pretty much nothing but potential hits, and now another one of them has a video. In the clip for the twinkling and sighing “Take My Hand,” from director Ryan Andrews, Charli swans around a frenetic dance party, throwing come-hither looks in every possible direction. It’s quite a performance. Watch it below. Read More...
