2013 (more by Fred Pessaro) Martin Sorrondeguy delivered awesome sets as a member of Crudos at Chaos in Tejas last month and with Limp Wrist twice this weekend, but now he'll bring another passion to the forefront next week: photography. As discussed at BVA, Sorrendguy has released the amazing Get Shot!, a compilation of photography by the punk frontman shot at various shows in the past 20+ years. Many of these photos, and others, will be front and center at an exhibition on June 24 at Superchief Gallery. The free show -- one night only -- opens at 5PM and Sorrendguy will have prints, his book, and latest zine available for purchase. Flyer is below. If you missed Limp Wrist over the weekend, you can watch video from Union Pool and LPR below. Why Produce Your Own Music When Someone Can Do It for You?
Jun 19, 2013 4:21pm | The Daily Swarm Let’s state the obvious: everyone is a DJ. And if enough people are doing it, you can bet that a bunch are going to rise to the top. It’s not enough to just push the play button or put the needle to the record; DJs need something that will help them stand out, like producing. Making your own music will take your career to the next level, but for some born without that part of the brain, this step can be cumbersome. Ghostwriting (having someone else make the music, while you take the credit) is an easy way around this, but it’s a service usually reserved for the high-powered clint – until now… Producer Factory is a new business venture that allows any DJ – big or small – to pay a fee to essentially buy the rights to someone else’s music and market it as their own. Ummmmmm… That’s a little, well, disturbing. Coveniently enough, they also offer services that will give you fake Twitter followers, Facebook fans, and SoundCloud plays. Welcome to the end, everyone. Jun 19, 2013 3:41pm | Brooklyn Vegan by Klaus Kinski Daniel Kitson 826NYC is a nonprofit tutoring center dedicated to helping students, ages 6-18, develop their writing skills in the realm of creative writing, expository writing and English as a Second Language. The 826NYC writing center provides free, daily, one-on-one tutoring sessions for students in need of after-school help. It also offers a free publishing resource to students, where volunteers are available to assist them in creating their own story collections, zines and other extracurricular student publications. In order for 826NYC to keep their vast array of programming free, they often throw insane comedy/music fundraisers in Brooklyn. 100% of the time the shows are more than worth the price of admission; but knowing your money is going to help childhood literacy makes dropping some coin on the event that much easier. True to form, 826NYC has a fundraiser coming up on Wednesday July 10 at the Bell House featuring a pretty unbelievable line-up. The evening will be hosted by Sarah Vowell and Eugene Mirman and will feature sets by BV fave Reggie Watts, another BV fave Daniel Kitson(!), and more special guests. If you haven't seen Daniel Kitson... my Cod... dude, he's the greatest. Quite simply, one of the most brilliant and talented comedians to come out of the UK ever. Not kidd...
Mixtape Of The Week: Migos Y.R.N.
Jun 19, 2013 3:36pm | StereoGum A couple of days ago, when I was writing about Yeezus, I was bathing in that album, thinking about it for days on end, playing it front-to-back on repeat for hours. Yeezus is a great album, but it’s not exactly a friendly one, and the experience was weirdly exhausting. It’s been a while since a hugely popular artist tried so hard to push vast swaths of the public away; Kid A is the only kinda-recent example that immediately jumps to mind. And by the time I was done and my piece was posted, I needed some goddam audio candy, and I knew exactly where I’d be turning. I’d been waiting for it, using it as a sort of carrot-on-the-stick incentive for when my piece was finally up. Y.R.N., the new mixtape from the Atlanta rap trio Migos, is everything Yeezus isn’t: Warm, fun, goofy, jokey, melodically immediate, buoyant, life-affirming, welcoming. I don’t love it the same way I love Yeezus, but it sure takes a lot less work to love. Y.R.N. is an immediately blast of joy, a fizzy summertime record that gets over on pure charm and craft, and I threw it on the second I was done with my Yeezus piece. Read More...
Pinkish Black
Jun 19, 2013 3:29pm | StereoGum Pinkish Black released our 17th favorite metal album of 2012 with their self-titled debut: a somber and disquieting no-wave take on doom metal. That album was released on avant-garde indie label Handmade Birds, but in November of last year, it was announced that Pinkish Black had signed to genre powerhouse Century Media, home to such heavyweights as Napalm Death, Arch Enemy, Watain, etc. It was an unexpected pairing, to be sure, but an exciting one: Pinkish Black would benefit from CM’s resources; CM would benefit from the infusion of vital new talent; metal would benefit from having one of its best new bands given such a pedestal. And man do they deserve it. Advances of Pinkish Black’s forthcoming Century Media debut, Razed To The Ground, started circulating late last month, and the thing is an absolute stunner. It’s heavier, more melodic, and more captivating than the band’s excellent 2012 release, and it’s pretty clearly going to place well on lots of Best Of 2013 (Metal Edition) lists. The new album isn’t out till September, but we’ve got its title track today. It’s three-plus minutes of dense, thundering space-goth, and it rules. Listen. Read More...

Kevin Gates one-ups Chief Keef with
Jun 19, 2013 3:21pm | Fact Magazine The Louisiana upstart flips Keef’s latest effort. On the latest leak off his Stranger Than Fiction mixtape, Kevin Gates takes the beat from Chief Keef’s ‘Macaroni Time’ for a ride. The synth-heavy track, produced by teenaged beatsmiths Dirty Vans and Vince Carter, is well-suited for the heart-on-sleeve Autotune addict. It goes without saying that Gates is also a more skilled technician than Chief Keef (‘Hold My Liquor’ aside), and he raps circles around the drill star while keeping things light (“Nintendo Wiiii”). Listen to ’100it Gang (Marijuana Time)’ below. His last release, ‘Roaming Around’, was tackled by the Singles Club, and he’s one of FACT’s rappers to watch. |
