Joe Goddard
May 20, 2013 4:15pm | StereoGum

Following up his 2011 EP Gabriel, Joe Goddard of Hot Chip is slated to put out a follow-up called Taking Over some time this year. Its first offering is “She Burns” featuring English singer Mara Carlyle. Their union is an interesting one, as Carlyle is famous for her use of ukelele and a musical saw, but on top of Goddard’s disparate, laser-laden lounge licks, she sounds like the main performer at a cabaret on Mars. Get into the groove below.

Yahoo's Billion Dollar Deal for Tumblr...
May 20, 2013 4:11pm | The Daily Swarm

Yahoo has taken the big plunge and bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion dollars – all cash. CEO Marissa Mayer left Google 10 months ago to oversee the rebirth of the tired internet brand; focusing on the youth market to help Yahoo rebound. It’s a huge risk seeing as how it’s a big chunk of Yahoo’s remaining cash, but at least they have the good sense to let Tumblr operate independently. Via Billboard Biz:

Yahoo also says that “per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business” with David Karp staying on as CEO.

Tumblr, a service started six years by Karp, a high school dropout, now figures to play a pivotal role in Mayer’s attempt to reshape Yahoo. To take on the challenge, Mayer ended a highly successful 13-year career at Google, which she helped surpass Yahoo as the Internet’s most influential company. Since coming to Yahoo, Mayer has concentrated on improving employee morale, redesigning services and bringing in more engineering talent through a series of small acquisitions that have collectively cost less than $50 million.

But could the move alienate Tumblr’s devoted user base?

The deal could backfire though if Yahoo’s effort to make more money alienate a Tumblr user base that so far has been subjected to hardly ...

Premature Evaluation: Queens Of The Stone Age
May 20, 2013 4:09pm | StereoGum

Last June, we published a feature called the Top 20 Albums We’ve Been Waiting For Forever, counting down a bunch of our favorite artists from whom a new full-length was: (A) long overdue; and (B) not totally unrealistic. Coming in at No. 19 on that list was Queens Of The Stone Age. As we wrote in that space:

Welcome to Wee Waa! Despite the Leak, Daft Punk's Premiere Party Was Still Magical...
May 20, 2013 3:57pm | The Daily Swarm

Choosing to premiere Random Access Memories in the small Australian town of Wee Waa, Daft Punk definitely turned a few heads. RAM was set to premiere at a hybrid music/farming festival and accommodations were soon booked completely. However, on May 14th, the album popped up online and the Wee Waa Motel saw “37 out of 60 cancellations in the day following the leak.” But in the end, it didn’t matter. Via Wired:

Yes, the album leaked; the attendance dropped, and two French guys didn

Stream Mount Kimbie Cold Spring Fault Less Youth
May 20, 2013 3:54pm | StereoGum

The London production duo Mount Kimbie came up making evocative post-dubstep dance music around the same time as James Blake, and there seems to be a pretty good chance that their long-awaited new album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, their first for a bigger label, could push them into Blake’s cultural circles. Whether or not that happens, it’s a pretty great showcase for their foggy, atmospheric blips and bloops. We’ve posted “Made To Stray,” “Blood And Form,” and the King Krule collab “You Took Your Time,” and now you can stream the whole album at NPR.

Cold Spring Fault Less Youth is out 5/28 on Warp.

Listen to Katie and Allison Crutchfield cover Grimes
May 20, 2013 3:44pm | Cosequence Of Sound

The stars in the celestial sphere have aligned if only for a moment to form an indie dream trio, with the Sisters Crutchfield (of Swearin’ and Waxahatchee) covering the preeminent future-pop queen Grimes. Their version of “Oblivion” uses garage rock silly putty to pull the tune right off Grimes’ funny pages, and while it’s a little more rough-edged than Claire Boucher’s original, it picks up all of the specifics that made the original one of our favorites of 2012. Stream the track below.

Katie spoke to Rookie Mag about why she was drawn to the track:

I read that the lyrics are about assault and feeling unsafe on the street alone, and I thought that was a really great topic that I felt politically aligned with. I

Turbonegro played Irving Plaza with Dirty Fences (pics)
May 20, 2013 3:30pm | Brooklyn Vegan

words & photos by Keith Marlowe

Turbonegro @ Irving Plaza, 5/18

Turbonegro played Irving Plaza Saturday night (5/18), their only East Coast gig before a short West Coast tour (with Torche opening,) that ends with them headlining Punk Rock Bowling with Bad Religion on May 26. The ever-present Turbojugend jackets illustrated how far people had come -- up and down the East Coast -- to make this show, repping from Boston down to Atlanta.

Turbo opened with "Just Flesh," playing a solid set of classics and songs off the new record, Sensual Harassment. People were streaming over the barricade all night, not letting up until the end of the last song, a furious cover of "Final Solution," by Cleveland punk greats Rocket from the Tombs.

Turbo's Volcom labelmates, NYC's Dirty Fences, opened the show, playing a lot of songs off their new album Too High to Kross. They also closed with a cover that has become a staple of their set, "Can't Tame Me" by the Benders.

More pictures from Irving Plaza are below.

Stream Roomrunner Ideal Cities
May 20, 2013 3:29pm | StereoGum

The former Double Dagger drummer Denny Bowen now leads Roomrunner, a Baltimore band whose fuzz-drenched attack brings back the moment before Gap commercial directors figured out what grunge was. Ideal Cities, their debut album, is a big, messy, joyous guitar-assault. If your faith in effects pedals needs reaffirming, this should do the trick. We posted the anthemic opener “Bait Car” already, but now the whole album is streaming at Spin.

Ideal Cities is out 5/28 on Fan Death.

Mamma Mia! Abba Overtakes the Beatles as UK's Second Best Selling Album of All Time...
May 20, 2013 3:17pm | The Daily Swarm

Abba’s greates hits album Gold has just surpassed the Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers and the Lonely Hearts Club Band as the UK’s second best selling album of all time. Number one? Queen’s greatest hits, which we’re fine with. Via NME:

Speaking to Officialcharts.com about the achievement, ABBA founder and songwriter, Björn Ulvaeus, said: “It’s feels unreal – outselling the greatest record of all time!”

He then went on to say, “Suck it, McCartney!” Ok, we made up that last part.

'Gold’ features all nine of the Swedish band’s Number One singles, including 'Waterloo’, 'Mamma Mia’, 'Fernando’, 'Dancing Queen’, 'Knowing Me Knowing You’, 'The Name Of The Game’, 'Take A Chance On Me’, 'The Winner Takes It All’ and 'Super Trouper’. The album has spent a total of eight weeks at Number One on the Official UK Album Chart.
