Bill Callahan announces new album, Dream River
Jun 18, 2013 10:50am | Cosequence Of Sound Singer-songwriter Bill Callahan (aka Smog) has announced the release of his new studio album, Dream River, due out September 17th via Drag City. Serving as the follow-up to 2011′s excellent Apocalypse (which made our list of the Top 50 Albums of 2011), the album was recorded in Cacophony, TX this past year, and is described by Drag City as “easily the most sensual and soulful of Callahan’s career.” A number of topics are covered across the album’s eight tracks, including “flying home in a small plane, drinking with the sleeping inhabitants of a hotel for company, painting boats for the summer, or flying towards the sea along the path of the dream river without the aid of any craft.” In support of the album’s release, Callahan will hit the road this fall. Stay tuned for those dates. Dream River Tracklist:

Die Antwoord
Jun 18, 2013 10:42am | StereoGum If you ever wanted to see Yolandi from Die Antwoord pee her pants, now is your opportunity with their new video for “Cookie Thumper.” This is the least troubling part of the whole thing, as the song is seemingly about being victimized by a recently-freed-from-jail drug dealer. I guess it’s better than black face? Major trigger warning. Read More...
UNO NYC upstart Ian Isiah channels The-Dream on
Jun 18, 2013 10:41am | Fact Magazine The song appears on his debut EP, L O V E C H A M P I O N, forthcoming via UNO NYC. An associate of New York underground kings Hood By Air and GHE20 G0TH1K, Ian Isiah shared a NSFW video for his Arca-produced slow-jam ‘M1NDFVCK’ last month. While that song is a hazy tone poem dedicated to mindfuckery, follow-up song ‘Blindfolded’ is a fully-formed R&B smash. Over a shifty beat (co-produced by fellow NYC talent King Royal) that is reminiscent of torch-carriers Timbaland and The-Dream, Isiah lays down a sensual, insistent vocal that is just as bedroom-focused as ‘M1NDFVCK’; the “Baby Oil Music” tag is definitely appropriate. Stream/download ‘Blindfolded’ below.
Julianna Barwick
Jun 18, 2013 10:40am | StereoGum Ambient-music soul-stirrer Julianna Barwick builds gorgeous landscapes out of her own voice, and her new album Nepenthe looms; we’ve already heard the early track “Forever.” “One Half,” the next song she’s shared from the album, might be the closest thing to an actual song, rather than undulating whisper-cloud, that Barwick has ever made, though it still works as an undulating whisper-cloud. The track makes room for string-sighs and actual words, and you can hear it below. Read More...
Progress Report: Jeff Tweedy
Jun 18, 2013 10:38am | StereoGum In the two years since Wilco released their eighth album, The Whole Love, frontman Jeff Tweedy has busied himself with an impressive array of extracurriculars. He applied starkly organic production to Low’s recent The Invisible Way and Mavis Staples’ forthcoming One True Vine, the legendary soul singer’s “Johnny Cash meets Rick Rubin” turn. He helped organize Wilco’s latest Solid Sound Festival, which returns to MASS MoCA this weekend after a one-year hiatus. He helped usher his sons into internet stardom
Iggy Azalea, Travi$ Scott@ Bowery Ballroom: June 17, 2013
Jun 18, 2013 10:28am | CMJ Photo by Emily Korn Australian hip-hop maverick Iggy Azalea brought her bracingly physical music to the Bowery Ballroom on Monday night, but that’s not all she brought. The blonde-haired MC was supported by rising rapper and Yeezus-contributor Travi$ Scott. Oh, yeah—T.I. was there too, rocking a yellow-sleeved t-shirt and all sorts of great T.I. faces. Our photographer Emily Korn was there to catch all the action. The post Iggy Azalea, Travi$ Scott@ Bowery Ballroom: June 17, 2013 appeared first on CMJ.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Jun 18, 2013 10:20am | Cosequence Of Sound True story: Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner once studied photography at New York’s Bard College, where he also played in a post-punk band called Challenge of the Future alongside Aaron Diskin, Mike Guy, Seth Prouty, and Simon Marcus. As Pitchfork reports, the outfit reunited last year to raise money for the daughter of a former Bard classmate who passed away in 2011, and now they’re keeping that charitable spirit going with a new benefit single. Titled “You Can’t Call Off the Dog”, the quick injection sounds like a Dead Kennedys anthem running from the police. Skittering guitars and pummeling drums numb the Jello Biafra-like vocals that get all rowdy and fussy — well, as much as a group of college kids can. The track’s available to purchase via Bandcamp, though you can stream the single and watch some video from the sessions below. By the way, does anyone remember Mosquito?
