'Modern Vampires of the City,' Destroyed Via Intellectual Spaghettification...
May 17, 2013 9:30am | The Daily Swarm

Selected excerpts from Matthew Friedberger’s confounding, scathing, brilliant pan of Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires of the City. Full piece at The Talkhouse. And in case you’re wondering what the hell spaghettification is.

Remember when they would sing about “Walcott” and maybe leaving Cape Cod? Remember the manner in which they performed? Are we to suppose that one was expected to hum along, dreaming a little dream about the charmed life? Of course not. Of course, of course not only. You’re free to find the songs pleasant if you’re so inclined. Using Eric Idle’s translation, I’ll admit there may be a bit of “Les Garçons de la Plage” about Vampire Weekend; selling a new rêve américain to whomever is endearingly silly enough to sign up for the 200% interest rate from the Native American Casino Check-Cashing Establishment.

In a recent Guardian interview with Vampire Weekend, the journalist, in the midst of doing things like complimenting Mr. Koenig for not saying “you know” too often, says that Modern Vampires of the City is “gorgeous.” And the journalist apparently meant it as a compliment!

... I hope that by following their current trajectory, in another four years or so Vampire Weekend will be able to...

Daft Punk premiered their new album in Wee Waa, Australia today
May 17, 2013 9:11am | Cosequence Of Sound

Earlier today, Wee Waa, Australia celebrated the release of Daft Punk’s first album in eight years, Random Access Memories. The town of 2,000 was chosen as the location of the album’s official launch party, taking place as part of the 79th Annual Wee Waa Show alongside activities such as sawing contests and canine high jumping. All week leading up to the festival, residents wore Daft Punk masks around town and documented their anticipation with a series of YouTube videos.

The Robots themselves did not attend today’s festivities, but residents were treated to an impressive setup that included a giant disco ball and an LED dance floor that displayed RAM’s album cover and the Daft Punk logo when lit up.

And there’s a limited edition version of Random Access Memories just for them (via @McCabeRadar)

The video below offers an aerial look at the festival grounds.

And here’s brief footage of the party itself.

Australia’s Herald Sun has a few additional tidbits, including the sighting of a “mysterious UFO which flew above the showgrounds in the afternoon.” Though, they didn’t feel the need to elaborate any further, because maybe that’s just a regular thing in Wee Waa, Australia.

Google launched its music subscription service this week to much ho-hummery, the service offering little above every other thing like it (Spotify, Rdio, etc.). But, according to writer Janko Roettgers, their big gambit is the social intelligence of the incomprehensibly titled Google Play Music All Access. Full analysis at paidContent:

Listen to the Wu-Tang Clan
May 17, 2013 8:18am | Fact Magazine

Return to the 36 Chambers.

Dug out from RZA‘s dusty vaults, ‘Execution In Autumn’ is exactly the kind of track Wu-Tang Clan fans have been waiting for, showing the hydra-like rap act firing on all cylinders over a typically crumbly Frank Dukes-produced beat. It might not be the new material we were all hoping for, but for now we’re content with this and it’s a timely reminder that when Wu-Tang are on form, they’re still just untouchable.

Let’s hope this is part of a long,
