Last week, Vampire Weekend released their third album, Modern Vampires of the City. One of the first songs from the album that the magpie-ish indie rock act premiered was “Step,” which lyrically references the title of a Run-DMC album and film, the city of Alameda, and inappropriately dressed punks at Astor Place in New York. It also borrows part of its chorus and thematic issues from “Step to My Girl,” a 1990s rarity by the Bay Area hip-hop group Souls of Mischief. Ducker got on the phone with Tajai of Souls of Mischief and the Hieroglyphics crew to get the story behind “Step to My Girl,” how Vampire Weekend came to use it, and the other unexpected places he’s heard his songs appear. Also last week, Souls of Mischief announced the summer-long Still Infinity Tour, which will commemorate the 20th anniversary of their debut ’93 'Til Infinity, and leads up to both a documentary about the landmark release and a new album due this fall.

Oh, how our little Girogio has grown. Famed producer and Daft Punk collaborator Giorgio Moroder can now add DJ to his long title. Last week, Moroder confessed that he took up DJ-ing and now has a booking agent. He’s even working with Aviici, which strikes us as odd; at the same time, pretty hip for the venerable Moroder. Now, here’s a weird one: Eminem’s publisher – Eight Mile Style LLC – is suing Facebook and an ad agency for using his song without permission; the ad agency is firing back, saying that the song’s production is incorrectly credited to Dr. Dre. We’re not sure how that makes sense; but let’s investigate, shall we?

Trevor Bolder, the bassist in David Bowie’s Spiders From Mars and Uriah Heep has lost his battle with cancer. He was 62. Bolder joined Bowie’s backing band in 1971 along with Mick Ronson drummer Woody Woodmansey. He contributed his skills to albums such as Hunky Dory, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, Aladdin Sane and Pin Ups. He later joined Uriah Heep in 1976. As the saying goes, “you’ve got some big shoes to fill,” or whatever it is. Never has that been more true than in the music business. Replacement singers are a gamble; you either ascent to the heavens of popularity or sink down into irrelevancy. Sometimes a new singer can be refreshing for a stale, old rock band; sometimes it alienates fans who can’t get over the original line-up.
