Electric Daisy Carnivale: Doing the Over-the-Top Bash in Moneyed Style...
May 17, 2013 1:55pm | The Daily Swarm

Our thinking on that headline was that the extra “e” at the end of “Carnival” makes it a rich person’s word. Prove us wrong. Full story at SPIN:

A gilded age requires platinum perks. And as the superrich plan to get their rave on this weekend, they may be asking themselves, WWGD (What Would Gatsby Do)?

Laurel Halo
May 17, 2013 1:51pm | StereoGum

The foreboding synth experimenter Laurel Halo named her new EP Behind The Green Door after a famed ’70s porn movie, and the latest track she’s shared from it is called “Sex Mission,” so maybe there’s a theme developing here. Or maybe not; the eight-minute “Sex Mission” — like “Throw,” the last track she shared from the EP — is a rigid mechanical pound, with nothing sensual about it. If these tracks are about sex, they’re about a particularly harsh and robotic form of it, which is maybe the point. Or maybe this is just the coldest house music anyone ever made. Listen to “Sex Mission” at NPR.

Behind The Green Door is out 5/21 on Hyperdub.

Nine Inch Nails loses Eric Avery, adds Robin Finck
May 17, 2013 1:44pm | Fact Magazine

Some line-up changes to the newly-reformed industrial rock titans.

Yesterday, former Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery pulled out of Trent Reznor’s latest incarnation of Nine Inch Nails, citing a desire to focus on his own music and film work rather than on a “growing” tour schedule. The split appears to be amicable, but Reznor wasted no time in finding a replacement: once-and-future NIN guitarist Robin Finck.

“I am proud to announce that the tour lineup now includes the incredible Robin Finck. The addition of Robin to the mix of players I’ve assembled makes this band incredibly powerful and versatile,” Reznor says on Facebook. “We are deep in the rehearsal process and it feels exciting and great to be back at this. Lots of information, surprises and sweat headed your way. Stay tuned!”

Finck will join Reznor, King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew, Telefon Tel Aviv

Eric Burdon & the Animals played two nights at Highline Ballroom (night 1 pics & setlist)

Eric Burdon @ Highline Ballroom, 5/15/2013

The band came out, and warmed the room up. the audience had a good mix of people, some old, some middle aged, and some young. Everyone seemed pretty excited, and the energy by this point was strong. Finally, he came out, and the band kicked into "When I Was Young".

Among the highlights were "Spill the Wine", which really sounded very funky and had a lot of life tonight, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", which had a sort of reggae feel, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", "I'm Crying", and, of course, the biggest and most famous song on the list, "House of the Rising Sun".

A strong overall performance by a musical legend, and it was really great to see him again! I think this show was probably a better performance than the two prior times I had seen him, although being front and center last time certainly enhanced the experience, I would say. But this was a very enjoyable evening, at affordable prices, and I was certainly glad to have been there! - [The Charbor Chronicles]

Rock legend Eric Burdon was in town this week with his current version of the Animals for two shows at Highline Ballroom on Wednesday and Thursday (5/15-5/16). (He also played a private show at the John Varvatos store on 5/14.) We caught his first Highline show and pictures from that, as well as the setlist, are in this post.

Rush
May 17, 2013 1:25pm | Cosequence Of Sound

It’s been a big year for Rush. Last month the prog-rock icons were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; now, two of the band’s past labels are reissuing their entire catalog on iTunes. Rush: The Complete Mercury Years and Rush: The Studio Albums 1989-2007, from Universal Music Enterprises and Atlantic Records respectively, have been remastered with “increased audio fidelity, more closely replicating what the artists, recording engineers, and producers intended.”

The Complete Mercury Years features 12 albums released under the Mercury label, from 1974′s self-titled debut to 1989′s live record A Show of Hands. The complete collection includes Fly by Night, Caress of Steel, 2112 (Deluxe Edition), All the World’s a Stage (live), A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Exit… Stage Left (live), Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, and Hold Your Fire.

Meanwhile, Atlantic’s The Studio Albums 1989-2007 collects seven albums: Presto, Roll the Bones, Counterparts, Test for Echo, Vapor Trails, Feedback, and Snakes & Arrows.

The collections can now be purchased on iTunes as entire packages, individual albums, or single songs. Rush’s most recent record, Clockwork Angels, is also still available from An...

Nine Inch Nails tap Robin Finck to replace Eric Avery
May 17, 2013 12:46pm | Cosequence Of Sound

Earlier this week, bassist Eric Avery announced his departure from Nine Inch Nails. Even though the band’s first show isn’t scheduled until late July, Trent Reznor wasted no time finding a replacement. As announced on the band’s Facebook page, longtime Nine Inch Nails collaborator Robin Finck has rejoined the band, and is already involved in rehearsals.

Fink has toured off and on with Nine Inch Nails since the mid-90s, and appears on five studio album. For this latest tour, he’ll perform alongside Reznor, Adrian Belew (King Crimson), and Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), along with previous NIN collaborators Alessandro Cortini and Ilan Rubin.

Nine Inch Nails 2013 Tour Dates:
07/26

Miracle Legion / Polaris singer Mark Mulcahy releasing first new LP in eight years, playing shows (dates, streams)
May 17, 2013 12:30pm | Brooklyn Vegan

by Bill Pearis

We haven't had a new album from onetime Miracle Legion and Polaris frontman Mark Mulcahy since 2005's In Pursuit of Your Happiness (one of my favorites of that year). (He unfortunately had to deal with some personal tragedies.) That is too long to be away from one of the great voices in music. That will change next month when the singer releases Dear Mark J Mulcahy I Love You via Mezzotint/Fire on June 18. Working with veteran indie rock knob-twiddler Paul Q. Kolderie, the new album finds Mulcahy in fine form, his raggedly emotive vocals warming you like a great be hug. You can stream two tracks from the album -- "She Makes The World Turn Backwards" and "Let The Fireflies Fly Away" -- below and both are terrific. Welcome back, Mark!

As mentioned, Mark will play NYC on June 27 at Mercury Lounge, shortly after his appearance at Wilco's Solid Sound Festival. Tickets for that show are still available. He's got shows throughout the summer and all tour dates, plus new LP artwork and tracklist and those song streams, are below.

Queens Of The Stone Age

Hey, another one of these! The fifth bloodily animated video for a song from the new Queens Of The Stone Age album …Like Clockwork is for the epic, churning, triumphant first single “My God Is The Sun.” In the clip, the dead stars of the videos for “I Appear Missing,” “Kalopsia,” “Keep Your Eyes Peeled,” and “If I Had A Tail” all reawaken as a gigantic winged sun rises in the sky. It all plays out like something a shop-class stoner might dream if he fell asleep watching Heavy Metal. Check it out below.
