DiS joins the Music Alliance Pact + May 2013's global MAP
compilation
May 18, 2013 7:56am | Drowned In Sound Drowned in Sound is very pleased to announce that we've taken over from The Guardian, as England's representative in a global network of bloggers who champion their country's local music scene known as the Music Alliance Pact (or MAP for short - see what they did there?). As you will see below, what this entails is once a month DiS submitting a track we recommend to a compilation that goes up on each blog who have also shared a choice. It's a great initiative and we're very pleased to be a part of it, as it's a fantastic way to champion the new music that we really love further afield, outside of the walls of DiS. Plus for you music loving readers, this means you are presented with oooodles of music from around the world to check out on a free(!) download compilation album. This will now be happening on DiS each month until they ask us to stop, so we hope you like it and let us know in the comments below if you discover anything interesting from the submissions from the rest of the network. For DiS' first submission, we suggested a name that is quite possibly familiar to a few of you. Tip: Click the play button icon to listen to individual songs, right-click on the song title to download an mp3, or grab a zip file of the full 36-track compilation through Ge.tt here. --- ENGLAND: Drowned In Sound Ghosting Season - Time Without Question (alternate version)

May 17, 2013 10:49pm | StereoGum Tonight Kanye West premiered “New Slaves,” the first single from his forthcoming LP, by projecting a video on buildings across the world. His site includes a map of times and locations for those projections, 66 in all. It’s the same song Hudson Mohawke spun in Poland recently. Earlier this month, the rapper previewed new material at the Met Ball and Adult Swim’s upfront, but decent recordings from those events have been scarce. Tonight’s launch was better documented. Watch the full video (as it appeared on a building in Brooklyn) and a Vine below. Read More...

May 17, 2013 5:06pm | Cosequence Of Sound Icelene Jones, the widow of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, has filed a cease and desist order against Rock the Bells over plans for a “virtual performance” featuring the rapper at this year’s festival. According to HipHopDX, Jones says she was not contacted about the performance even though she is administrator of ODB’s estate and is the only person who can approve the use of the rapper’s likeness. However, Jones is not entirely opposed to the performance, saying in a press release, “I am looking forward to talking to Wu-Tang about this matter and coming up with a positive solution in order to bring my husband to the stage once again.” Earlier this weekend, ODB’s mother Cherry Jones appeared at the press conference announcing the festival and offered her blessing. Cherry and Icelene have been at odds since the death of ODB in 2004, feuding over everything from the will to management of his estate.
No Joy played Glasslands with Weekend who are playing Northside

May 17, 2013 4:26pm | Brooklyn Vegan photos by Bryan Bruchman / BTRtv; words by Bill Pearis No Joy / Weekend @ Glasslands, 5/17/2013 No Joy's tour swung through NYC this week, with two shows for the Montreal shoegazers, first at Mercury Lounge (5/15) and then at Glasslands last night (5/17). The band's new album, Wait to Pleasure, is very much a studio creation, with producer Jorge Elbrecht of Violens buffing some of their more jagged edges in favor of more a lush sound that would've been right at home on 4AD Records in 1988. It's a terrific record, but I was happy to see no laptops or headphones at their show last night. While still in possession of honeyed vocals from Jasamine White-Gluz (using a harmonizer to great effect), songs like "Hare Tarot Lies" took on more pummeling form. This was especially true of show-closer "E" (which is opens their album) that is kind of their "You Made Me Realize," disintegrating into pure noise. For fans of goth-leaning shoegaze, this was a great show as support came from Weekend who moved from San Francisco to Brooklyn last year, and even more recently adding a fourth member, Nick Ray, to the band. With Ray on bass, singer Shaun Durkan now plays second guitar. One might expect that to result in an even greater din, but last night's show was a bit turned-down, volume-wise, for the band.
