by Bill Pearis

With little more than keyboards, drums and her powerful pipes, Brooklyn's Xenia Rubinos has forged her own sound which can be heard on her new album, Magic Trix, which is out now on Ba Da Bing. You can stream a few songs from the album and check out a couple videos below.

As mentioned, Xenia is playing Brooklyn Museum's 'Audiophile' series on August 15. It's one of a bunch of local shows she has scheduled this summer. She's also got two dates with Sinkane: June 14 at Brooklyn Bowl as part of Northside Fest (tickets) and June 16 at Maxwell's (tickets).

She's also playing 285 Kent on July 11, and then a Summer Splash Concert Cruise on August 12 with Los Amigos Invisibles (tickets). She's got a few non-NYC dates too, and all are listed below.

Paul McCartney @ Frank Erwin Center, Austin, 5/23/2013

Paul McCartney's Out There tour just swept through Austin with a two-night stand at the Frank Erwin Center and we've got pictures (and setlists) of the pyrotechnic/av/hit-filled extravaganza over at BV Austin.

The former Beatle plays two nights at Barclays Center in a couple weeks and while  the June 8 show appears to be sold out, tickets are still available for June 10.

In other news, McCartney has joined the growing list of musicians supporting the release of incarcerated Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina who is currently on a hunger strike. He wrote a letter to Russian officials, saying:

My personal belief is that further incarceration for Maria will be harmful for her and the situation as a whole, which, of course, is being watched by people all over the world. In the great tradition of fair-mindedness which the Russian people (many of whom are my friends) are famous for, I believe that you granting this request would send a very positive message to all the people who have followed this case.
Meanwhile, the classic 1976 live album, Wings Over America, is getting the deluxe box set reissue treatment next week (5/28) with a bonus disc of audio, a DVD featuring a rarely...

[listen] Beliefs and Greys record new songs for Scion Sessions
May 24, 2013 2:00pm | Chart Attack

Hand Drawn Dracula’s 5th anniversary showcase happens June 15th at Toronto’s Garrison, and Scion have sponsored a free 7″ release of a new song each from Beliefs and Greys, to be handed out at the show. If you go to the show you’ll probably be riding your bike or taking public transit, but if you’re considering driving, why not drive with Scion? The car company clearly wants you to be thinking of them while you’re at the concert, between anxiously looking for/avoiding your friends and puking discreetly under a table, and what better method for that than free vinyl?

Listen: Ghost B.C. Covers Depeche Mode
May 24, 2013 1:16pm | CMJ

In typical Ghost B.C. fashion, the Swedish rockers have covered another non-metal song to add to their covers collection amongst ABBA and the Beatles. Ghost B.C.’s cover of Depeche Mode‘s “Waiting For The Night” comes off the band’s Japanese edition of their new album, Infestissumam, as a bonus track. Luckily, the track has surfaced online.

The group’s take on the serene Depeche Mode track showcases Emeritus’ sweeping vocals on top of the hauntingly grim ambiance that Ghost B.C. effortlessly create. Let the doom and gloom overtake your senses with this cover and check out the orignal version, below.

Listen to Prince really wail on a cover of Pearl Jam
May 24, 2013 1:05pm | Cosequence Of Sound

Even though Prince has some half a billion songs of his own, he enjoys a good cover. In fact, many fans would argue he’s just as likely to pop off a classic FM jam on the whim as The Boss or Phish. Here’s some fuel for that reasoning: Recently, the Twin Cities royalty has turned his head to the Pacific Northwest with a silky rendition of Pearl Jam’s classic hit, “Even Flow”.

As Dr. Funkenberry.com points out, the eccentric icon has been rehearsing a spin on the song, which “features a guitar duel between Prince and Donna Grantis that morphs into Aretha Franklin’s version of ‘Rock Steady’ before reprising the end vamp of ‘Even Flow’.” He’s currently prepping for tomorrow night’s hometown gig at Minneapolis’ The Myth.

Can’t make it? Stream portions of the rehearsal at Dr. Funkenberry, or via the SoundCloud plyaer below.

Earlier today, Prince dropped some visuals for his latest single “FIXURLIFEUP” following his jack knife-less performance at Billboard Music Awards. Big stuff ahead for the Purple One.
