Watch Grizzly Bear Play Ellen
May 24, 2013 10:29am | StereoGum
I’m not sure if this necessarily qualifies as a career milestone for Grizzly Bear, since they’ve already been on a million TV shows. But maybe it’s an indicator of how nebulous and meaningless the entire idea of indie rock has become: Grizzly Bear playing their fractured, floating “Yet Again” on Ellen, as Ellen DeGeneres, who apparently loves the band, gives free copies of Shields to everyone in the studio audience. They sounded good, in any case, and you can watch the performance below.
The Faces Albums From Worst To Best
May 24, 2013 10:24am | StereoGum
We begin our discussion of the Faces, as we must, with “The Rod Conundrum” — one of the thorniest in all of rock and roll lore. Cue the ESPN 30 For 30 voice over: “What if we told you that Rod Stewart was once every bit as cool, dangerous, and desirable as Keith, Kurt, or Kanye …”
Well, It actually happened. And it was amazing. And then there was the rest of it.

As mentioned, punk/indie pop trio Lemuria are releasing their new album, The Distance Is So Big, on June 18 via Bridge Nine, and they're currently on a tour ahead of its release. That tour hits the NYC-area twice this weekend, including shows TONIGHT (5/24) at Maxwell's and Saturday (5/25) at Shea Stadium with Bridge and Tunnel, Jeff Rosenstock (of Bomb the Music Industry), and ex-Snowing frontman John Galm's excellent new garage punk band, Slow Warm Death (who we just profiled). Advance tickets for the Maxwell's show and the Shea show are still available.
We've still got a few weeks before Lemuria's new album hits shelves (or iTunes libraries), but they did reveal a taste of it with the album's lead single, "Brilliant Dancer." That single was released digitally and on vinyl this week, and the band are also selling copies on tour. The single comes with an exclusive non-album b-side, "Helloing," which is just as good as any of the standouts on The Distance Is So Big and not just some throwaway track. Check out the new song below via Spotify, along with a list of updated dates.

Listen to Ra Ra Riot and The Darcys cover Constantines
May 24, 2013 10:00am | Cosequence Of Sound
Canada’s beloved indie label Arts & Crafts is celebrating 10 glorious years with a special compilation record, X. The collection brings together bands from the label’s roster for original compositions, like the just-released Broken Social Scene/Years collaboration “Day of the Kid”, plus covers of songs from Arts & Crafts’ past.
In the latter category, Ra Ra Riot and The Darcys team up to tackle “Time Can Be Overcome” by Constantines. Taken from the band’s one A&C release (incidentally their last before taking a break), Kensington Heights, the original is a sparse alt-country leaning ditty with scratchy, gruff vocals. The cover flips the script a bit, flushing out the sound with Riot-ous strings and quickening drums, while the vocals are delivered in steadier, smoother breaths. Listen in below.
Arts & Crafts: X will be available May 28th on LP, CD, and digital formats.

Bangers under the baton: listen along to Gregor Schwellenbach
May 24, 2013 9:57am | Fact Magazine
Notoriously convivial Cologne-based techno label, Kompakt Records, turns twenty this year.
Rather than simply releasing a massive best-of boxset, producing a variety of celebratory merch items, and holding a series of birthday rave-ups (actually, they are doing all of these as well), they’ve asked composer, Gregor Schwellenbach, to create an album of classically-inclined arrangements of some of the standout tracks from the label’s back catalogue.
Having trained at Hannover’s prestigious Hochschule für Musik und Theater and studied with composers such as Heiner Goebbels, Michael Nyman, and electronic music pioneer Rüdiger Rüfer, Schwellenbach is steeped in a tradition stretching back centuries. His own compositions have been performed at esteemed international festivals of new music and for a wide variety of national theatres and broadcasters
