Three eras. Three Suedes. Ten years apart. Three different bands.

Every so often, the UK music press seizes upon a new guitar band to spin doctor, and more often than not, proclaims them the next Arctic Monkeys, next Oasis, the next big thing. A few years back, I saw the Camden-based, leather-jacketed, guerrilla gig-playing Tribes written up as the next Libertines and, for much the same reasons that I can still be found buying the NME when Pete and Carl are on the cover, checked them out. Every year or so, some arrant nonsense about an impending Smiths reunion briefly does the rounds. It’s easy to forget, then, that a Smiths reunion of sorts has actually already happened – albeit back in 1988. 

Salford’s finest called it a day back in 1987 following Johnny Marr’s departure from the group. Morrissey swiftly began work on a solo career, working with Vini Reilly and Stephen Street on his first solo effort Viva Hate. A year to the day after their split, Morrissey’s manager contacted his former band members to invite them to join the singer at a forthcoming gig at Wolverhampton Civic Hall. Although Marr demurred, drummer Mike Joyce and bassist Andy Rourke took up the offer – a remarkable call, given that Joyce and Rourke were suing Morrissey at the time (something Joyce says “wasn’t mentioned.”)

As NME report, rare footage of the December 22, 1988 gig has now emerged online. The video shows the band rattling through a string of Smiths tracks which had never been played live before, plus material Joyce and Rourke had previously recorded with Morrissey, including ‘Last Of The Famous International Playboys’. Smiths tracks include ‘Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before’ and ‘Sweet And Tender Hooligan’, with a clutch of Morrissey originals sprinkled into the 40-minute set too. Tonight (5/23) at 10:30 PM ET / 7:30 PM PT, Queens of the Stone Age will perform their entire new album ...Like Clockwork live from the The Wiltern in Los Angeles, streaming at NPR.

Queens of the Stone Age will travel to Los Angeles this evening for an intimate concert at the Wiltern, where they’ll perform their new album …Like Clockwork in full. NPR Music will be streaming the performance live online — tune in here beginning at 10:30pm ET / 7:30pm PT.

Like Clockwork features Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Elton John, Alex Turner, Mark Lanegan, and more, and is due out June 4th through Matador Records. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Hollywood, FL’s Beach Day revealed another song from their upcoming debut, Trip Trap Attack, out June 18th via Kanine Records. “Stay” has heavy influence of 60s girl groups such as The Shangri-La’s, The Ventures, and The Ronettes with some surf rock mixed in. Think a more poppier Best Coast or Dum Dum Girls. Listen to the song below and the previously released “Boys” here.

“In The Zone” from Airbird & Napolian featuring Erika Spring is one our favorite jams, recently. YOu can bet it will be making several appearances over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Everything about the track screams warm weather and summer. On the other side of that single is the b-side “Special.” With this song, we get more of a chopped-up house track. “In the Zone” b/w “Special” is out now via Cascine. Listen below.

History from Stockholm’s Molly Nilsson was one of the more grossly unappreciated albums from last year. Her music paints in cold tones and her vocals are reminiscent of Nico or even a female Matt Berninger of The National. In fact, her sound as a whole has many of the same elements of The National. On June 21st, Nilsson will be releasing her fifth and latest album The Travels via Dark Skies Association/Night School. The first single from the LP is pleading “Dear Life.” The lyrics read like a diary entry of someone searching for something more.
