GoogaMooga day 2 in pics (Father John Misty, Lee Fields, Sharon Van Etten, Matt & Kim ++ more)

Father John Misty / Lee Fields / Sharon Van Etten

Saturday (5/18) at Great GoogaMooga in Prospect Park was Misty both onstage and off. J. Tillman (aka Father John Misty) played mid-afternoon set as light, atomizer-like rain frizzed hair and kept everything just a little moist. (Sunday the rain got worse and producers pulled the plug on the event.) Unlike Friday's paid-ticket kickoff event with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Flaming Lips and The Darkness, Saturday's admission was free (though you had to order tickets) and also featured sets from headliners Matt & Kim, plus Lee Fields & the Expressions, Sharon Van Etten, Jovanotti and more. Pictures from Saturday are in this post. Did you brave the not-too-bad-weather for some music, beer and grub?

You can check out Friday pics of YYYs, The Flaming Lips and The Darkness. More pictures from Saturday below...

The Thermals
May 21, 2013 9:39am | StereoGum

In Portland punks the Thermals’ video for “The Sunset,” the second single from their new album Desperate Ground, badass bassist Kathy Foster gets a star turn. She plays a boxer training for a big fight with, as far as I can tell, the camera operator, and she also gives us her version of Rosie Perez’s dance from the Do The Right Thing opening credits. The band co-directed the video with Jeffrey Rowles, and you can watch it below.

System of a Down
May 21, 2013 9:35am | Cosequence Of Sound

It’s been eight years since System of a Down released their double album, Mezmerize/Hypnotize. They’ve toured sporadically since, but there’s been no inkling of new music to the dismay of fans and even some band members.

In a since-deleted Facebook posting (via Loudwire), bassist Shavo Odadjian railed against frontman Serj Tankian for holding up a new album and suggested the band would be open to recording music with a different singer. Maybe they can

Seven years have passed since the former teen prodigy of trance James Holden released his debut The Idiots Are Winning.

More of a mini-album, it centred around two epic tracks, ‘Lump’ and ’10101′, that threw done the gauntlet for what modern techno could be. Since then, electronic music has waned and waxed, as it’s wont to do, from dubstep to blubstep, aquacrunk to seapunk, bassline to plain bass. Holden, in the meantime, has released just one single

The National played 'Letterman,' playing free show at Public Assembly this afternoon, Mercury Lounge TONIGHT (tickets on sale at noon)

The National in Ithaca (more by PSquared Photography)

The National's new album, Trouble Will Find Me, is out today (Pitchfork gave it Best New Music) and the band took a night from their just-started tour to play The Late Show with David Letterman last night. Video of that is below.

The band are still in town and will celebrate the new record tonight (5/21) with a very intimate show at Mercury Lounge. Tickets to that go on sale at noon. Good luck.

UPDATE: They're playing small NYC clubs all day, apparently, including Public Assembly at 5 PM. To go to that, email troublewillfindmentnl@gmail.com and confirmation emails will be sent by 3 PM. There may be more and you can follow their Twitter to find out.

UPDATE 2: Purchase the record IN STORE at Other Music today before 4pm and you'll be entered to win a pair of tickets (to Mercury Lounge we assume). Winner will be notified between 4 and 5pm.

If you can't get tickets for tonight, there are still tickets available for The National's slightly larger scale show at Barclays Center on June 5.

Letterman video below...

Blood, guns and table tennis: watch the video for Roc Marciano collaborator Telemachus
May 21, 2013 9:13am | Fact Magazine

New on UK hip-hop veteran Jehst’s YNR Productions label: In the Evening, a new album by Telemachus.

Featuring guest spots from Roc Marciano and more, FACT TV today premiere the video for In the Evening‘s ‘Tennis Season’. Without giving too much away, it features sweat, blood, tennis, bordering-on-gratuitous flesh and dismemberment in the most literal sense (ahem). Watch it til the end.

You can download ‘Tennis Season’ now; a launch party for In the Evening takes place next Wednesday in London.

Stream The-Dream IV Play
May 21, 2013 9:02am | StereoGum

We’ve been waiting a while to hear a new album from the sex-obsessed, hitmaking R&B weirdo The-Dream, and that album, IV Play, is finally here. We’ve already heard the early singles “Slow It Down” and “IV Play,” as well as the Jay-Z collab “High Art,” and the album also has appearances from Beyoncé, 2 Chainz, Kelly Rowland, Pusha T, and others. But the real reason to dive into this one is that it promises to once again return us to Terius Nash’s sticky inner universe. Stream the whole album with the YouTube playlist below.

Slow Warm Death -- upcoming dates, live video & LP stream
May 21, 2013 8:57am | Brooklyn Vegan

by Andrew Sacher

Brooklyn-based band Slow Warm Death is the current project of John Galm, who previously fronted the beloved math-emo band Snowing (and before that Street Smart Cyclist), but for this project he's taking the lo-fi/garage rock route, and he does the sound just as well and genuine as his previous style. They've shared local bills with bands like Literature and LODRO, and if you're into that kind of scene, Slow Warm Death will be right up your alley.

This past March, Slow Warm Death released their self-titled album on limited edition cassette (which is now sold out) and digitally. For a guy whose previous bands included lots of noodley guitar playing, on this record, the guitars are thick and rhythm oriented. It's got a punked up style that brings to mind bands like The Stooges or even that recent Ceremony album, but it's not without its hooks either. You can stream the album in full below or download it (name your price) at bandcamp.

As usual, the band have some local dates scheduled, including this Saturday (5/25) at Shea Stadium opening the previously discussed Lemuria show, which also has Bridge and Tunnel and Jeff Rosenstock (of Bomb the Music Industry) on the bill. Tickets for that show are still available. After that, they have shows scheduled at The Paper Box on June 3 with Honeydrum and Mannequin Pussy (tickets) and Cake Shop on June 9

Austra
May 21, 2013 8:42am | StereoGum

Austra and Ital are both feel-good stories about the nice things that can happen when punks pick up computers. Austra’s frontwoman Katie Stelmanis was a shining light of Toronto’s art-punk scene for years before she put together her icy electro-goth group, and Daniel Martin-McCormick spent time in the great percussive skree bands Black Eyes and Mi Ami before he began making stripped-back, conceptual dance music as Ital. And now Ital has put together an itchy, skeletal eight-minute remix of “Home,” the throbbing first single from Austra’s new album Olympia. Below, listen to that remix, as well as another from Detroit techno legend Kevin Saunderson, and check out Austra’s upcoming tour dates.

FACT to stream Seth Troxler and Julio Bashmore live from Field Day this weekend
May 21, 2013 8:34am | Fact Magazine

One of the biggest events on the UK festival calendar, Field Day, takes place this weekend.

With TNGHT, Animal Collective, Bat for Lashes and more booked for the one day event, which takes place in East London’s Victoria Park, it’s Field Day’s biggest line-up yet. If you haven’t got a ticket though – or, you know, if you prefer a dark room to a sunny field – never fear, because FACT are streaming two of the biggest acts from the stage that we’re partnering with Bugged Out.

First, from 2pm-3.35pm, we’ll be broadcasting Seth Troxler, lynchpin of the Visionquest stable and one of the world’s most reliably entertaining DJs – and, we should add, quote machines. Then, from 8.35pm-9.35pm, we’ll be streaming Julio Bashmore, the Bristol house producer whose globetrotting crossover hits, ‘Battle for Middle You’ and ‘Au Seve’ have seen him ascend to the top rung of the dance music ladder in some style.

Simply tune into the FACT website on Saturday, May 25, for the video – and keep your eyes on FACT TV post-festival for plenty more videos and interviews from the event.

May 21, 2013 8:20am | Cosequence Of Sound

According to TMZ, Chief Keef was arrested in Atlanta yesterday on charges of disorderly conduct.

Earlier this year, the 17-year-old Chicago rapper (born Keith Cozart) was sentenced to 60 days in prison after violating his probation. The probation stemmed from a January 2011 incident in which he pointed a gun at a Chicago police officer.

Dance music legend Giorgio Moroder, who contributed to the new Daft Punk album, came to Williamsburg club Output last night (5/20) for his first-ever NYC DJ appearance, as part of the Red Bull Music Academy NYC residency. He took the stage just after midnight (so technically 5/21, just as the Daft Punk album was officially released) and, with DJ Chris Cox, played until about 1:45 AM.

Singer/songwriter Diane Birch was in attendance and she said it was "her and a bunch of dudes" (or MoBROders), and also that it "may have been the sickest thing [she's] ever seen." Were you there? If so, what did you think?

Some more instagrams, a short video, and a vine from the show below...
