May 23, 2013 3:26pm | The Daily Swarm

Newfound BFFs Iggy Azalea and Angel Haze cemented their bond by recording a freestyle over the beat from Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Otis.” It was pretty fucking great. Via Consequence of Sound:

Earlier this month, Angel Haze and Iggy Azeala performed a show together in London.

Tea Party Lawmaker a Pretty Crappy Beatmaker...
May 23, 2013 3:17pm | The Daily Swarm

You may be somewhat surprised to hear that when he’s not underreporting his assets on campaign finance disclosure forms, Florida Tea Party Congressman Trey Radel is a hip hop producer. Not a very good one, mind you. Via Spin:

The latest hustle by the new wave of the Republican party, wrapped up in Tea Party insanity, is “Hey guys, we’re hip! We like hip-hop.” Right now, it’s just a series of blips on the conservative-crank radar: Marco Rubio proudly dropping the kind of rap “knowledge” you’d have to be a moron not to pick up on if you went to college in the early ’90s; Waco, Texas, Tea-Party rapper Polatik, who fashions himself a bootstrap-repping MC with good ol’ Amurrrican valyooos; or the occasional editorial from the right, or even left-leaning, “real hip-hop”-repping goofs, who will try to convince you that contemporary hip-hop’s attitude is more in line with the G.O.P.'s, anyway, you feel me? So, just grab some popcorn, sit back ,and prepare to LOLZ at the latest example of the Republican rap revolution: Florida Congressman and hip-hop beatmaker Trey Radel, who shared a bunch of his production work with Esquire. The best beat

Listen to Broken Social Scene and Years
May 23, 2013 3:00pm | Cosequence Of Sound

As previously reported, famed Canadian indie label Arts & Crafts is celebrating their 10th anniversary with X, a compilation of collaborations between bands on their roster. For their contribution, Broken Social Scene have teamed with avant-rocker Ohad Benchetrit (aka Years) for a track entitled, “Day Of The Kid”.

Over the course of six minutes, the outfit lays down hushed vocal harmonies, muted guitars, and intermittent drums played with true deliberateness. And though the song never reaches some grand release, only moving from non-existent to slightly fragile, the methodical build is spellbinding in and of itself.

Charli XCX
May 23, 2013 2:55pm | StereoGum

True Romance, the excellent debut album from the British pop singer Charli XCX, is pretty much nothing but potential hits, and now another one of them has a video. In the clip for the twinkling and sighing “Take My Hand,” from director Ryan Andrews, Charli swans around a frenetic dance party, throwing come-hither looks in every possible direction. It’s quite a performance. Watch it below.

Guy Who is Our New Hero Impersonates Psy at Cannes, Everyone Buys It...
May 23, 2013 2:39pm | The Daily Swarm

A guy who doesn’t even look that much like Psy put on dark glasses and a suit and conned his way into Cannes, pretending to be the South Korean pop star. Via Spin:

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the fake PSY was seen all over the French town, and he managed to fool not only partygoers who posed for pictures with him, but also the Getty Images celebrity division FilmMagic. Actress Naomi Harris also tweeted a photo of herself with not-PSY.

When the real Psy heard about the impostor, he responded in the exact sort of chill bro way you’d expect.

The real PSY eventually caught wind, tweeting from Singapore, “Seems like there’s another ME at cannes … say Hi to him.”

The Roots
May 23, 2013 2:27pm | Cosequence Of Sound

On May 31st, the city of Philadelphia will honor native sons and future Tonight Show house band The Roots by unveiling this colorful mural on the side of the World Communications Charter School. It was designed by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh and Amber Art and Design as part of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.

Begun in the fall of 2012, the mural is part of a larger project that included a youth arts education program called “Roots 101″, citywide paint days, and a special lecture series. Below, watch ?uestlove and Black Thought discuss the project and its significance.

The dedication ceremony and unveiling, which ?uest and crew will attend, is scheduled for 11:30 AM on Friday, May 31st (just one day before the annual Roots Picnic). Located at 512 S. Broad Street, attendees are instructed to use the South Street entrance (and now you know).

7 Seconds Announce First Album in 8 Years, Still Walking, Rocking Together...
May 23, 2013 2:25pm | The Daily Swarm

Eighties hardcore heroes 7 Seconds have signed to Rise Records, and are working on their first LP since 2005’s Take it Back, Take it On, Take it Over!. Via Exclaim:

Details are still developing behind the as-yet untitled LP, but the hardcore band will head into a Sacramento studio this summer to lay down a number of tracks. The record will feature the long-standing line-up of vocalist Kevin Seconds, bassist Steve Youth, drummer Troy Mowat and guitarist Bob Adams.

“We have about 20 new songs that we’ll record the best 13 songs from. This new record will be all about the energy and drive we still very much possess as a hardcore band,” Seconds said in a statement. “It’s been nine long years since we’ve recorded a new album so there’s a great deal of urgency in them, with just the right mixture of both fast and mid-tempo tunes for people to sink their teeth into.”

The band is also planning to rerelease deluxe versions of several albums from their early-to-mid ’80s heyday.

Is it just us, or does the phrase “Youth Crew” get progressively more ironic.

Listen: Earl Sweatshirt
May 23, 2013 2:23pm | CMJ

Everyone’s favorite 19-year-old, Earl Sweatshirt, just released a new track, Guild, that’s slated to be on his upcoming full-length, Doris. Earl is joined by goofy frat-rapper Mac Miller, who’s clearly benefitting from Earl’s lead. The two volley verses among sludgy beats about sex (duh), Schindler’s List, moms, and Twitter—which, by the way, seems to be the new website to name-drop if you’re a young hip hop artist (*cough, cough* Chance the Rapper).

The track isn’t that much of a surprise, seeing as the duo already performed the song live back in March, but this time you can hear it above the shrieks and growls of enthusiastic fans. Check out Guild below via Fader, and lament the fact that you’re not a part of this beautifully blossoming friendship.
