Kanye West premieres new single
May 17, 2013 9:15pm | Cosequence Of Sound

G.O.O.D. Friday, indeed: In anticipation of his appearance on Saturday Night Live, Kanye West will premiere a new song and visuals projected on 66 buildings across the globe this evening. The exact locations are detailed on KanyeWest.com.

Update: According to Kanye associate Virgil Abloh, the song is titled “New Slaves”. Watch a short YouTube video of the projection from Williamsburg, Brooklyn below.

“New Slaves” marks the first taste of his long-awaited sixth solo album, the follow-up to 2010′s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

West reportedly recorded the as-yet-titled album in Paris alongside a number of guest contributors — everyone from Daft Punk and TNGHT to Chief Keef and Azealia Banks.

Icelene Jones, the widow of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, has filed a cease and desist order against Rock the Bells over plans for a “virtual performance” featuring the rapper at this year’s festival.

According to HipHopDX, Jones says she was not contacted about the performance even though she is administrator of ODB’s estate and is the only person who can approve the use of the rapper’s likeness.

However, Jones is not entirely opposed to the performance, saying in a press release, “I am looking forward to talking to Wu-Tang about this matter and coming up with a positive solution in order to bring my husband to the stage once again.”

Earlier this weekend, ODB’s mother Cherry Jones appeared at the press conference announcing the festival and offered her blessing. Cherry and Icelene have been at odds since the death of ODB in 2004, feuding over everything from the will to management of his estate.

No Joy / Weekend @ Glasslands, 5/17/2013

No Joy's tour swung through NYC this week, with two shows for the Montreal shoegazers, first at Mercury Lounge (5/15) and then at Glasslands last night (5/17). The band's new album, Wait to Pleasure, is very much a studio creation, with producer Jorge Elbrecht of Violens buffing some of their more jagged edges in favor of more a lush sound that would've been right at home on 4AD Records in 1988. It's a terrific record, but I was happy to see no laptops or headphones at their show last night. While still in possession of honeyed vocals from Jasamine White-Gluz (using a harmonizer to great effect), songs like "Hare Tarot Lies" took on more pummeling form. This was especially true of show-closer "E" (which is opens their album) that is kind of their "You Made Me Realize," disintegrating into pure noise.

For fans of goth-leaning shoegaze, this was a great show as support came from Weekend who moved from San Francisco to Brooklyn last year, and even more recently adding a fourth member, Nick Ray, to the band. With Ray on bass, singer Shaun Durkan now plays second guitar. One might expect that to result in an even greater din, but last night's show was a bit turned-down, volume-wise, for the band. We’re still not sure if he’s joking. Wall Street Journal:

I managed over 12,000 people at Groupon, most under the age of 25. One thing that surprised me was that many would arrive at orientation with minimal understanding of basic business wisdom.

Shut Up, Dude: This Week
May 17, 2013 3:47pm | StereoGum

This was the week we finally got to hear Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. As hosts of the album’s official launch party, the town of Wee Waa, Australia was especially excited. We also had a party (of the unofficial, digital kind), at which you guys shared your initial reactions to the set. The LP’s on track to top the Billboard charts next week and you can read our Premature Evaluation here. RAM is the topic that dominates this week’s Shut Up, Dude, but we had other fun discussions too (e.g., LCD Soundsystem’s 10 Best Songs). Check out the highest and lowest rated responses to everything below.
