Watch: That Über-Weird 'American Psycho' Parody From Kanye...
Jun 18, 2013 6:00pm | The Daily Swarm

Yes, it’s weird. Yes, it stars Scott Disick (a faux-celebrity that you hopefully don’t know). But… It is an American Psycho parody and it’s kind of amazing. Replace all of the Huey Lewis and the News references with Yeezus and you’ve got one of the more brilliant moments of Kanye’s album campaign. Via Billboard:

During the film, Disick explains his feelings on the new album (echoing the original’s rant about Huey Lewis and the News) to a vaguely uninterested Cheban, decrying the “insecurities of the mainstream music press” and calling “New Slaves” a “masterpiece” and “a song so catchy, most people won’t even remember the lyrics.”

Watch: The Ramones During Their CBGB Heyday...
Jun 18, 2013 5:29pm | The Daily Swarm

Though the uploader may have gotten the specific date wrong, the Ramones performing at CBGB will always be timeless (unless they did it now with new members in the John Varvatos store). This classic clip shows them at their purest form, playing for their hometown crowd. They tear though “Beat on the Brat,” “Rockaway Beach,” and our personal favorite for no specific reason, “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue.” Check it out, via Open Culture:

Lady Gaga Sued for Swagger-Jacking...
Jun 18, 2013 5:06pm | The Daily Swarm

Gasp! Is Lady Gaga not as original as she claims to be? French performance artist Orlan believes so. She thinks there’s a suspicious similarity between one of her sculptures and a the opening scene of Gaga’s “Born This Way” video. She’s currently seeking 7.5% of the profits from the video and album – a cool, $31.7 million – and also wants to halt sales of the album. Yeah, ok. Via The Huffington Post:

The Post reports that the lawsuit accuses Gaga of using the same “plexiglass support, same square shape when it comes to the haircut, same facial implants, same decapitated heads,” as Orlan’s 1996 sculpture “Femme Avec Tête,” or “Woman With Head”

Those “facial implants” are a sticking point between Gaga and Orlan. The French artist did them first and, in a sense, better — where Gaga’s notorious horns were cosmetic, Orlan actually had cheekbone implants surgically inserted onto her temples as part of a series of surgical “interventions” she staged in the early nineties as performance art. When “Gaga first stepped out with what the press was calling 'bizarre flesh-coloured facial horns,’” writes French blogger de Camille, there was little “shock or surprise” in France. “Many people in my Parisian circle immediately were reminded of” Orlan. ...

Jun 18, 2013 4:51pm | The Daily Swarm

Check out the video for “A Tattered Line Of String” – the new song off of the Give Up Deluxe 10th anniversary Edition. Get primed with a few notes from the press release.

The arresting and dreamlike clip finds one of two previously unreleased songs from the Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (Sub Pop) transformed by Parisian video team AB/CD/CD (Lily Allen, Factory Floor) into a surreal tale of longing and laundry.

Sofia Coppola and Music Supervisor Talk 'Bling Ring' Soundtrack, Kanye's Role...
Jun 18, 2013 4:27pm | The Daily Swarm

Looking at her previous work, music has always been central to the way Coppola conveys emotion and frames a scene. Sofia Coppola’s newest film The Bling Ring is a close examination of our celebrity-fixated culture, centering around a bunch of brats that steal from the rich and famous needs an equally pseudo-glamorous soundtrack. Carrie Battan of Pitchfork sat down with Coppola and her longtime music supervisor Brian Reitzell to discuss how they chose the music for her latest film.

Pitchfork:You wanted to pick stuff that teens would be into, but the soundtrack is hip in a way that

Fight the Power! How You Can Fight Against Pandora's Artist Rates...
Jun 18, 2013 4:07pm | The Daily Swarm

If you’re a musician who’s ever gotten a check for $0.03 from Pandora, you already know that the situation is dire. It’s not just you, but every artist who is bare knuckle-battling Pandora for a better rate for their music. This is the last thing Pandora wants to do; they even have a lobbying group to assure that this will never happy. But don’t lose hope – there are ways to fight back. Via Hypebot:

Pandora needs two copyrights to play a song on Pandora.

1) The Recording: (For example, Arista Records hired Whitney Houston to sing the song “I Will Always Love You”. When they are done, the recording of that song is owned by Arista Records.)

2) The “Composition”: (aka the lyrics and melody). (For example, Dolly Parton wrote the song “I Will Always Love You” that Whitney Houston sang.)

by Bill Pearis

As mentioned, Nashville's snarling, glammy Cheap Time are currently on the road with SoCal punk vets Social Distortion and The Loved Ones frontman Dave Hause (who plays a free RBSS show with The Gaslight Anthem). That tour hits the NYC-area on Saturday (6/22) at Stone Pony Summerstage with Hot Water Music and Sunday (6/23) at Warsaw. Tickets for both NYC-area shows are still available.

Cheap Time have squeezed in a headlining gig happening in NYC after those shows at Pianos on Monday night (6/24) with Pittsburgh's Shockwave Riderz and The Vim Dicta. Tickets are $8 at the door. Hopefully Cheap Time will try out material from their new album which is due this fall.

Shockwave Riderz features Phil Boyd and Paul Quattrone, who some of you may remember from '00s-era garage rockers The Modey Lemon, who called it quits in 2010. Their new thing is a little more stripped down and prone to riding a motorik groove. Zone out on their three-song EP below. In addition to Monday's Pianos show, you can also catch Shockwave Riderz opening for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion their previously discussed at Music Hall of Williamsburg (7/18) show (tickets).
