Miley Cyrus reveals bonkers video for Mike WiLL Made It-produced
Jun 19, 2013 12:56pm | Fact Magazine The strangest video you’ll see today, complete with twerking, body horror, and a piñata full of hot dogs. The video for Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can’t Stop’ is what happens when a teen pop star makes a hip-hop party video in the age of Tim and Eric. Directed by video veteran Diane Martel, the clip features a scantily-clad Cyrus toying with a few hip-hop tropes (grills, twerking) and some out-there imagery, from taxidermied animals wearing jewelry to a skull made of french fries. See for yourself below. The controversy-courting single was reviewed by the FACT Singles Club, who alternately called it a “dead-eyed ode to MDMA written by people who don
Beloved and Influential Jazz Guitarist Johnny Smith, 90, Passed
Away...
Jun 19, 2013 12:46pm | The Daily Swarm He lived a long and fulfilling life full of professional success and quality family time, and for that, he was a blessed man. But at the round, old age of 90 years, legendary Jazz guitarist Johnny Smith has passed away. The revered innovator will be remembered fondly for his clear tone and quick, ascending melodies. A virtuoso of sorts, he taught himself to play the guitar as a boy sitting in pawnshops, and by 13, he was already teaching others. He learned to read music while playing in the U.S. military band, after which his career took off as a member of the Birdland jazz club and in the orchestral pit of the New York Philharmonic. A decorated musician, he gained high critical appraise with albums including Moonlight in Vermont, and his most famous original tune “Walk Don’t Run.” He retired in the 1960s and moved to Colorado so as to spend more quality time with his family. He’s also been the inspiration and designer for a number of designer guitars, including the Gibson Johnny Smith and the Heritage Johnny Smith. Smith is survived by a daughter and two sons, a brother, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Album single "Detroit Part 1," is Shigeto's typical nu-jazz-meets-hip-hop style, but the other cut he's released, "Ringleader," is new ground for him. Jun 19, 2013 12:41pm | Chart Attack Freddie Gibbs stays defiantly posted on the outskirts of rap’s mainstream, and with each successive release he makes a strong case that maybe it’s the industry who needs to change. His verses are jacked with a fight-or-flight delivery, as if delivered two inches away from your face, and even on the blog friendly beat for

JJ DOOM
Jun 19, 2013 12:32pm | StereoGum In 2012, rap-weirdo legend DOOM teamed up with the quirky producer Jneiro Jarel to form the short-lived duo JJ DOOM and released the album Keys To The Kuffs. Nearly a year later, they’ve made a video for the album track “Bookhead,” and it shows DOOM going through a Kafka-style metamorphosis, joining forces with a bodega security mirror to become a human fisheye lens. He then goes shopping for used books. The street artist Steve “ESPO” Powers directed the video, and you can watch it below. Read More...
South African comedian Trevor Noah' doing acclaimed one-man show
'Born a Crime' in NYC
Jun 19, 2013 12:27pm | Brooklyn Vegan by Klaus Kinski Gang, I've been sitting on this news since May and feel like a real dildo about this world-class stupidity on my part. It's now mid-June. I hate myself for this. Anyhow, better late than never, right? Right. Beginning way back on May 15, 2013, South African comedian and monologist Trevor Noah brought his one man show, Born A Crime, to the off-Broadway confines of 45 Bleecker in Manhattan. The show, in which Trevor discusses the trials and tribulations of being born of mixed race in Apartheid South Africa, has enjoyed a ridiculously successful run of sold-out performances in theaters in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Originally called The Racist, Trevor performed the show at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe in a month long, sold-out run which basically made him comedy royalty. Then he did a whopping three month run across South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa to still even more acclaim and more sell-outs. He then ran his show for a pants-shittingly astounding 6-week, sold-out run at London's famed Soho Theater. Trevor is one of the most brilliant storytellers in the business and the greatness of Born A Crime is sure to propel him into the upper-stratosphere of world-famous comediandom. His material is extremely dense and fast-paced and comes from a place that hardly any of us could even fathom. Truly, h...

Listen to Porcelain Raft
Jun 19, 2013 12:25pm | Cosequence Of Sound Dream pop conductor Mauro Remiddi, a.k.a. Porcelain Raft, will drop his sophomore album, Permanent Signal, on August 20th via Secretly Canadian. While he’s previously teased us with an album trailer, we now have the first official single with the weepy decadence of “Think of the Ocean”. As expected, it’s a staggering block of depression, though this time around, Remiddi’s work feels extracted from a post-modern foreign film, thanks to the stirring strings and the droning tones. As the songwriter writes in a press release,
Yes, There Will Be A 'Yeezus' Tour...
Jun 19, 2013 12:23pm | The Daily Swarm There wasn’t a tour for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, but the world will not be denied again. Mike Dean, a contributing producer on the latest album as well as Cruel Summer and Watch The Throne, confirmed the Yeezus tour in a recent Reddit AMA. He also confirmed that he’ll be a member in the backing band. Mr. West has already performed a number of the new songs live, quite notably at the Governor’s Ball Festival in New York City. We can tell you from personal experience that it was quite the emotional, stellar, raw and magical kind of shit. Unfortunately, those are all the details he revealed about the upcoming tour, nothing so far on dates or cities. But Dean also said a lot of cool things about Kanye’s creative process, what cool unreleased material he has in the wings, what it’s like working with Kid Cudi and more. It worth a glance. For now, wet your appetite with this snippet from NYC.

Jun 19, 2013 12:14pm | Fact Magazine Dominick Fernow massively reconfigures the Order of Noise standout. The propulsive ‘Court Of Lions’ appears on Vessel’s debut solo album for Tri Angle Records, Order of Noise. On his remix of the track, Hospital Productions’ Dominick Fernow (under his Prurient alias) strips away the layers of clattering percussion to reveal something ambient and
Tree
Jun 19, 2013 12:10pm | StereoGum One of the strongest rap mixtapes of the year thus far is Sunday School: When Church Lets Out, the latest from the tough and gnarled Chicago rapper/producer Tree. Tree just shared his video for the honking, soul-thundering mixtape track “Busters” this morning, but he must’ve taped it months ago, when Chicago was still frozen tundra. There are not too many things that look cooler than one guy rapping his heart out in the snow. Watch it below. Read More... |
