The Kids Are Not Alright: Festivals Are Too Expensive for the Youth Market...
May 21, 2013 2:25pm | The Daily Swarm

Yes, we all that festivals are exorbitantly expensive, but now it’s getting to the point where the average festival-goer is above 35. Will festivals lose their cultural influence if they cease to be about the kiddies? Well, thanks to online piracy, artists must demand more for live performances, but can we rightly blame kids for their filesharing ways? FACT talked to Rob Da Bank for his insight on the problem.

Austra remixed by Ital and Kevin Saunderson (listen); tour w/ DIANA starts soon
May 21, 2013 2:14pm | Brooklyn Vegan

Austra at Music Hall of Williamsburg in 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

As mentioned, Austra are releasing their sophomore album, Olympia, on June 18 via Domino/Paper Bag, and will be touring in support of it over the next few months. That tour hits NYC for a show on June 20 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Mozart's Sister (sold out) and a BrooklynVegan-presented show on September 22 at Webster Hall (tickets).

The Webster Hall show and many of their other August/September shows are with fellow Canadians DIANA, who just signed to Jagjaguwar in the US and Paper Bag in Canada. Their debut LP, Perpetual Surrender will come out on August 20 and you can watch the video for its single, "Born Again," below.

Regarding Austra's upcoming album, in a recent interview with Stereogum, singer Katie Stelmanis talked about the differences recording this one with her band, as opposed to entirely solo like Austra's debut:

Yeah, it's something that I was kind of craving. I feel like when you hear a solo record from someone you can kind of always tell that it's a solo record. Like, if literally one person did everything on the record it's like you're following their train of thought. Everything is predictable and fits into this certain box. It's one person's idea, and I was very aware of that, and I wanted to create something that's a little more dynamic. And so doing that I wanted to bring...

Listen to Jacques Greene
May 21, 2013 1:59pm | Fact Magazine

Montreal’s Jacques Greene continues to reconcile house and R&B on his latest release.

After teasing it yesterday, LuckyMe has detailed the forthcoming release from Jacques Green, the On Your Side EP. From the sound of it, the EP heavily features Greene’s trademark R&B-meets-house sound, most recently heard on his collaboration with Tinashe.

The title track, which premiered today on Zane Lowe’s BBC 1 show, features How To Dress Well’s Tom Krell on vocals. Rounding out the release are the previously-premiered

Listen to Deafheaven
May 21, 2013 1:57pm | Cosequence Of Sound

Deafheaven’s George Clarke and Kerry McCoy enjoy bodysurfing of the different sort. Rather than risk the sharks and shell shards (say that three times faster), the Bay Area duo let themselves go in the raw orchestral distortion — and for 10 whole minutes. It’s the stuff meant to shake and shatter arenas everywhere. Good god. Stream below.

Looking Back at Hip-Hop's Love of Versace...
May 21, 2013 1:47pm | The Daily Swarm

It’s true that every luxury brand has some sort of place in the heart of hip-hop. Despite the fact that Jay-Z could be rocking 10 different brands at once, no one brand’s history is the same. Few labels have had such a storied history in hip-hop as Versace. Let’s take a look at the most important hip-hop milestones for the brand. Via “Complex“:

The genre found a willing partner in Gianni Versace, the Italian designer who established the iconic label in 1978. The over-the-top opulence that Versace embodied

Jessica Pratt at Maxwell's - 5/17/13 (via @cbruno1983)

Loner folk devotee Jessica Pratt just wrapped up a tour supporting Father John Misty, which hit the NYC-area this past Friday (5/17) for a show at Maxwell's, where FJM played solo acoustic, unlike his theatrical performance at The Great GoogaMooga the next day. Jessica played backed by a keyboardist and sounded delicate and wonderful as ever. Check out a video from her set below.

As mentioned, Jessica is about to do a few dates with Grouper, including one in NYC on June 2 at Le Poisson Rouge with Raajmahal and a DJ set from onetime Cocteau Twins bassist (and current Bella Union label head) Simon Raymonde. Tickets for that show are still available. Jessica has since added her own NYC show happening a day earlier (6/1) at Union Pool with Gambles (aka ex-Levy member Matthew Siskin) and Zachary Cale. Tickets for the Union Pool show are on sale now. Show flyer below.

And as discussed, Jessica will return to Le Poisson Rouge on July 12 to open for Julia Holter, which is one of a few shows the two musicians are playing together that month. Tickets for that show are still available

After she wraps up her run with Julia Holter, Jessica will do some West Coast dates with White Fence. Updated dates are listed, along with the Maxwell's video and Union Pool sh...

Listen to Pharrell Williams
May 21, 2013 1:13pm | Cosequence Of Sound

After spending much of this year associated with French robots, super-producer Pharrell Williams is linking back up with world-conquering super villains. Williams helmed the soundtrack to the first Despicable Me, and now he’s contributing music to its upcoming sequel.

Among the three tracks Williams supplied is “Happy”,  a ’60s pop ditty that switches gears from sexy disco anthems. Williams lays down some effervescent organ, snappy handclaps, and lyrics so simplistic and joyful they’re irritatingly catchy (“Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof”). Listen in below.

The Despicable Me 2 soundtrack hits stores on June 18th. The film stars Steve Carrell, Kristen Wiig, Steve Coogan, and Ken Jeong, and hits theaters July 3rd. Watch the trailer below:

They've got a few other upcoming Northeast dates scheduled too. All dates are listed, along with a video of the band playing "Crazy Rhythms" off their classic 1980 debut LP of the same name at The Bell House last week, below...

Listen to Pharrell
May 21, 2013 1:01pm | Fact Magazine

The song will appear on the soundtrack to the animated Despicable Me 2.

As he did for Despicable Me, Pharrell (and collaborator Heitor Pereira) will be responsible for the music of the animated sequel. The first peak at the soundtrack is ‘Happy’, which finds Pharrell in soul-throwback mode a la Mark Ronson or Janelle Monae. It’s definitely one of his more, er, animated songs.

The Despicable Me 2 soundtrack is due out on June 18, with the film to follow in July. Pharrell recently teased a host of projects in the pipeline, and he appeared on an album you might have heard of. [via Atrilli]

May 21, 2013 12:55pm | The Daily Swarm

Headlines relating to the Red Bull Music Academy in New York are a dime-a-dozen, but that doesn’t make any of these well-curated events any less special. A select few were treated to a lecture from experimental producer Four Tet on how he builds his live sets. Via Pitchfork:

Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet was one of the participants in Red Bull Music Academy, the energy drink mega-brand’s roving music school and event series. (RBMA was also behind the recent Drone Activity in Process event and Brian Eno lecture.) Today, Red Bull has shared a seven-minute tutorial video in which Hebden explains how he builds his songs in a live setting. He’s acting as a “studio mentor” for the academy.
