Rick Ross and Birdman finally announce release date for long-lost collaborative album The H
May 17, 2013 2:35am | Fact Magazine

The MMG and YMCMB empresarios are primed to drop a mothballed collaborative album, dating back to 2008.

Rumblings about The H have been going on for half a decade. Back in 2008, Ross revealed that he and Birdman were working on an album-cum-movie project, saying that he and Birdman “went in the studio for the hood.”. As Ross graduated from fame to bona fide superstardom, however, the project quietly slipped onto the backburner. As Complex report, the record is now finally set to see the light of day.

In an interview shot during the video shoot for DJ Khaled’s ‘No New Friends’ single, the pair have announced that the album will see release next week. According to Birdman, the record was recorded over a week or so in 2008, and sees the pair “speaking from the heart”.

The H: The Lost Album Vol 1 2008 is due on May 23. Ross’ forthcoming LP Mastermind is expected later in the year.

Pixies to collect unseen images in lavish
May 17, 2013 2:30am | Fact Magazine

Boston’s finest are to be commemorated in a snazzy Kickstarter-funded compendium.

Megafan Sean T. Rayburn, webmaster of the band’s fan-run website PixiesMusic, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a lush photographic collection of the band. Pixies: A Visual History, Volume 1: 1986-1993 will arrive as hardcover coffee table book, featuring previously unseen photos and archival images of the band during their initial recording career. The band’s members are on board with the project, with Rayburn pledging that he’ll also be meeting with their families and photographers from the period.

The Kickstarter page has set the bar very high, asking for $150,000 to get the project off the ground. The kitty currently sits at around $25,000, with the book priced at $75 and cheaper goodies like photo prints and postcards also available to buy. Provided the first edition sees the light of day, Rayburn has also promised a second volume covering the band’s post-Pixies activities and 2004 reunion.

Over to Rayburn:

Some of you may be wondering, “so Sean, WHY do you need a Kickstarter to put this project together?” The answer is that book publishing is very expensive, especially to do it right. To make this a great project, I am meeting with hundreds of people from all over the world, people who have worked with the band,...

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
May 17, 2013 2:24am | Drowned In Sound

We've all had those nights out. You know it happened, but you've no idea how. Well, that's a bit what listening to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories is like. That is, if you fell down the disco rabbit hole into a synth-funk dominated Wonderland.

You're getting ready for your night out somewhere in 1979, when 'Give Life Back To Music', with its clean instrumentation and distinct lack of electronic mayhem, pops on the stereo. It's just the right groove to soundtrack the doing-your-hair part of your evening. It gets you ready for whatever the night might bring. It could happily sit on Off the Wall, although instead of Michael Jackson on vocals, it

30 Seconds To Mars - LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS
May 17, 2013 2:23am | Drowned In Sound

Jared Leto can't save you. Let's get that out of the way immediately. He can't save you any more than he can bring about world peace, turn water into wine or part the Red Sea. And whilst his rockstar messiah posturing is nothing new (although his philanthropy and support for gay rights in America is admirable), 30 Seconds To Mars' endless lyrical platitudes and 'you-are-not-fans-you-are-family' sloganeering can grate. But none of that mattered until now, because what Jared Leto could do, and do incredibly well, was compose/perform gorgeous alternative rock whilst looking gorgeous himself: he possessed the two vital prerequisites for pop superstardom in spades - good looks and big hooks. And while time has done little to diminish his faunlet-like androgynous beauty, sadly it does appear to have neutered his muse.

LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS has been engineered to make it appear grandiose, an album imbued with deep meaning and importance; the cover is Damien Hirst, the title is ALL CAPS, the artwork for first single 'Up In The Air' brazenly referenced Hum's Nineties space-rock classic You'd Prefer An Astronaut, and was subsequently literally sent into space. Whilst 30 Seconds To Mars have always traded in the sweeping and spectacular - their music videos, directed by Leto himself, are masterful, hyper-stylised mini epics - all the high profile perimetrics feel decidedly over-compensatory this time around, as LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS<...

Human After All, Indeed: The Best Daft Punk Interview You Never Read...
May 16, 2013 11:32pm | The Daily Swarm

From The Daily Swarm:

Sometimes, the collective “we” forgets just how avant-garde Daft Punk has been throughout its uncanny career arc. In the wake of the ubiquity of the hit single “Get Lucky” and the mass hysteria preceding the official release of accompanying album Random Access Memories early next week, it’s easy to overlook the challenging elements and influences the duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo have incorporated into Daft Punk’s shiny metallic pop-art appeal. At the same time, it’s amazing how remarkably consistent the vision of the maverick electronic group has proven – how it’s been expanded upon and elaborated as it morphs into different incarnations.

This is nowhere more clear in what hindsight is proving to be (in my not-so-humble opinion) the best Daft Punk interview ever published. Speaking to the late, great Stop Smiling magazine in 2008 for a cover feature Q&A centered around the U.S. release of Daft Punk’s first feature film, the wildly experimental road movie Electroma, the individual members of Daft Punk opened up like never before. (It may be, in fact, the most loquacious de Homem-Christo has ever been to a journalist.) In addition to going deep into the roots of their obsessive cinephilia, Bangalter and de Homem-Christo painted a picture of the influe...

Bookies Predict Daft Punk to Break Oasis' First Week UK Sales Record...
May 16, 2013 8:06pm | The Daily Swarm

Via NME:

The band’s new album 'Random Access Memories’ is expected to beat the record currently held by 1997’s 'Be Here Now’, with bookies Paddy Power cutting the odds dramatically on the French duo’s chances, according to Music Week. 'Be Here Now’ sold 650,000 in its first week of sales, but 'Random Access Memories’ has already scored the highest number of pre-sales for any dance album ever on Amazon. Paddy Power are giving 4/5 odds on the record outselling Oasis. The album is released tomorrow (May 17).

The LP has 7/1 odds of becoming the best-selling album in UK chart history by 2015.

Sophia Coppola Taps Kanye, M.I.A., Frank Ocean for 'Bling Ring' Soundtrack...
May 16, 2013 7:57pm | The Daily Swarm

Via Exclaim:

Sofia Coppola has some amassed some stellar musical ties over the years, recruiting Kevin Shields to write songs for 2003’s Lost in Translation and tapping her husband Thomas Mars’ band Phoenix for Somewhere. Now, she’s recruited a similarly impressive lineup of musicians for her upcoming flick, The Bling Ring.

The soundtrack is due out on June 11 through Def Jam, and it will include a heap of tunes from well-known artists like Kanye West, Frank Ocean (featuring Earl Sweatshirt), M.I.A., Sleigh Bells, Rick Ross (featuring Lil Wayne), Phoenix, Can, deadmau5, and Azealia Banks. Nearly all of the material on the soundtrack has already been released, however, and the tracklist includes some extremely famous songs (Kanye’s “Power” and “All of the Lights,” and M.I.A.'s “Bad Girls,” for example).

Listen to The Weeknd
May 16, 2013 7:51pm | Fact Magazine

The title track to his debut LP is a seven and a half minute epic.

‘Kiss Land’ surges and sparkles, and it’s one of Abel Tesfaye’s most immediate efforts since House of Balloons. Like ‘House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls’ and ‘XO / The Host’ before it, the song is more like a two-part suite with a tonal shift halfway through. Earlier this week, he teased the song with a video entitled ‘John Carpenter’.

Stream the song below. Kiss Land is due later this year. Earlier this year, The Trilogy saw release as a 6xLP boxset.

Thom Yorke Scores Documentary About Tax Avoidance...
May 16, 2013 7:45pm | The Daily Swarm

Via Pitchfork:

The next chapter in the politically active part of Thom Yorke’s career is a score for a documentary on tax avoidance, The Telegraph reports. The UK Gold, a feature-length film set to premiere in London on June 25, chronicles the history of tax avoidance in Britain. Yorke teamed up with Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja and Elbow’s Guy Garvey for the music for the film.

Written and directed by Mark Donne and narrated by Dominic West (who played McNulty on “The Wire”), the film focuses on the “dramatic battle of a vicar from a small parish in the London Borough of Hackney as goes head to head with an ancient and mighty heavyweight, revealing its central status as the tax-haven nerve centre of the world.”
