[listen] Beliefs and Greys record new songs for Scion Sessions
May 24, 2013 2:00pm | Chart Attack
Hand Drawn Dracula’s 5th anniversary showcase happens June 15th at Toronto’s Garrison, and Scion have sponsored a free 7″ release of a new song each from Beliefs and Greys, to be handed out at the show. If you go to the show you’ll probably be riding your bike or taking public transit, but if you’re considering driving, why not drive with Scion? The car company clearly wants you to be thinking of them while you’re at the concert, between anxiously looking for/avoiding your friends and puking discreetly under a table, and what better method for that than free vinyl?

Listen to Prince really wail on a cover of Pearl Jam
May 24, 2013 1:05pm | Cosequence Of Sound
Even though Prince has some half a billion songs of his own, he enjoys a good cover. In fact, many fans would argue he’s just as likely to pop off a classic FM jam on the whim as The Boss or Phish. Here’s some fuel for that reasoning: Recently, the Twin Cities royalty has turned his head to the Pacific Northwest with a silky rendition of Pearl Jam’s classic hit, “Even Flow”.
As Dr. Funkenberry.com points out, the eccentric icon has been rehearsing a spin on the song, which “features a guitar duel between Prince and Donna Grantis that morphs into Aretha Franklin’s version of ‘Rock Steady’ before reprising the end vamp of ‘Even Flow’.” He’s currently prepping for tomorrow night’s hometown gig at Minneapolis’ The Myth.
Can’t make it? Stream portions of the rehearsal at Dr. Funkenberry, or via the SoundCloud plyaer below.

Earlier today, Prince dropped some visuals for his latest single “FIXURLIFEUP” following his jack knife-less performance at Billboard Music Awards. Big stuff ahead for the Purple One.

The theatrical Swedish metal band Ghost B.C. have already shown that they have a way with the incongruous cover song; we posted their version of Abba’s “I’m A Marionette” back in January. And apparently, the Japanese version of their new album Infestissumam includes a cover of Depeche Mode’s gloomy 1990 synth ballad “Waiting For The Night” — which, it turns out, already has-kinda-metal lyrics, and which can be turned into a crunchy metal track without altering the music too much. Listen to the Ghost B.C. version below.

Watch a 12-minute Kanye West freestyle from 2005
May 24, 2013 12:15pm | Cosequence Of Sound
Eight years ago, Kanye West stopped by the Tim Westwood radio show in the UK and freestyled for about 12 minutes and it’s great. The year is 2005, so of course Yeezy is rapping about conflict diamonds in Africa, but many topics are broached, including how to make the best rap songs (get a beat from Kanye), and a verse that starts from reading messages fans are sending to him in real-time. Any number of lines could be highlighted, but here’s one that cracked Kanye up after he said it: “I’m out in UK, and I ask ‘em who’s the best and the say, ‘You, K.’” Watch the playback below (via Fake Shore Drive).

Black Prairie released a book soundtrack, touring; John Moen released a new song; Colin Meloy playing solo shows

The Decemberists in Austin in 2011 (more by Tim
It's been a while since we've heard from The Decemberists, but the band's members are still finding ways to keep busy. Their side project, Black Prairie, whose lineup now includes four of the five Decemberists members (Chris Funk, Nate Query, Jenny Conlee, and John Moen -- aka everyone except Colin Meloy), released a new album this year which is a "soundtrack" for New York Times magazine writer Jon Mooallem's book, Wild Ones. You can stream that album in its entirety below, and read what Jon Mooallem had to say about it at Slate.
Black Prairie are also going on a tour which includes previously discussed stops at Bonnaroo and Newport Folk Festival. The tour hits NYC for a show with Michael Hurley at City Winery on July 29, the day after they play Newport Folk Festival. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Colin Meloy plays Newport Folk Fest too, so if he and his bandmates don't team up for at least one Decemberists song, that's just cruel and unusual. It's one of three solo shows Colin has scheduled (all festivals, none in NYC). All upcoming Black Prairie and Colin Meloy dates are listed below.
Finally, as mentioned, John Moen is releasing a new solo album, Revise Your Maps, on June 25 via Jealous Butcher Records. We already posted the song "Ramble Scramble" from t...
