May 16, 2013 5:23pm | Brooklyn Vegan

Deradoorian @ Our Heart Ached for Syria SXSW 2013 benefit (more by Tim Griffin)

As mentioned, Nightlands tour will hit NYC at the end of the month for a show at Mercury Lounge on May 29. The night has become more enticing as Deradoorian will be opening and promises to debut a few new songs. Tickets are still available. Her only other show at the moment is opening for Animal Collective at Washington DC's 9:30 Club on June 10.

Nightlands, meanwhile, have added a few shows since we last posted about them -- including a stop at North Carolina's Hopscotch Music Festival -- and all dates are listed below.

May 16, 2013 5:18pm | Cosequence Of Sound

If you spent last night at home, you may have caught Black Sabbath performing their new song “End Of The Beginning” on the season finale of CSI. While it was a fun cameo appearance (with some rather horrible dialogue) today’s Rock it Out! Blog episode examines the best rock star cameos in television history. From Radiohead’s appearance on South Park to the countless musicians who’ve appeared on The Simpsons. Share your favorite in the comment section.

Other headlines covered on today’s episode include the ridiculous lineup for Riot Fest, a new album from Franz Ferdinand, how you can pay your respects to Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, and another new music video from Queens of the Stone Age.

Pogues Guitarist Philip Chevron Diagnosed with Terminal Cancer...
May 16, 2013 5:03pm | The Daily Swarm

Pogues guitarist Phillip Chevron has been diagnosed with terminal head and neck cancer. Chevron fought the same disease in 2007. Via Exclaim:

The head and neck cancer for which he received treatment in 2007 and a clean bill of health in April 2012 has in fact returned. In August 2012, Philip and his doctors noticed a new tumour and this one is in a position whereby treatment is seriously ill-advised and would almost certainly cause a stroke or worse. The cancer is, in short, inoperable and will prove fatal in time, though it is at present impossible to measure life expectancy. Chevron, who was last year part of the releases The Pogues In Paris and The Radiators’ Sound City Beat, is currently taking a break from both bands. The Pogues are on a prolonged time out, emerging only in support of matters relating to their 30th anniversary this year, while the Radiators From Space have formed a splinter group, The Trouble Pilgrims, in which Chevron plays no part. In recent times, Chevron has accepted several theatre music commissions, including the Old Vic Theatre in London and Galway’s Druid Theatre.

Philip thanks his friends, colleagues, family and management team for their enduring support and hopes to make some notable musical contributions before, as he puts it, the cancer becomes “lethal.

Chevron played in Irish punk band Radiators from Space prior to joining The...

more dance clubs invade Williamsburg: TBA open now; megaclub Verboten coming soon
May 16, 2013 4:52pm | Brooklyn Vegan

There's another new megaclub coming to Williamsburg:

Verboten (German for "forbidden") -- a popular dance party company that throws techno and house DJ events around the city -- is applying for a liquor license for its soon-to-open nightclub on North 11th Street that will hold more than 700 people, company representative Jen Schiffer said at a public meeting this week.

"It attracts a discerning crowd of music fans, Europeans, hipsters, freaks, party girls and industry types," the company's website explains of its "techno programming."

Schiffer said the new venue would include two rooms -- one that could accommodate 411 people and another that could hold 321 guests. The venue has applied to remain open until 4 a.m. on weeknights and 6 a.m. on weekends. - [DNA Info]

Verboten, which will be located at N. 11th and Kent (which puts it right by Output) and can hold 700 people across two rooms, is also promising lessons for kids during the daytime and a full kitchen.

Not to neglect the South Side, another club, called TBA, opened about six weeks ago at 395 Wythe Ave (at S. 6th St.). It's a little more mini than mega. Says NY Mag:

Run by a gaggle of nightlife veterans from Blkmarket Membership, Porch, and Deep, the democratic space (there's no door policy) has a pumping sound system, stiff tequila drinks (try the Habla Habanero, made with...

My Morning Jacket to begin work on new album
May 16, 2013 4:47pm | Cosequence Of Sound

Jim James is currently touring the country in support of his debut solo album Regions of Light and Sound of God, but in October he’ll reconvene with the rest of My Morning Jacket to begin work on a new studio album.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, James said the band is “in the process of nailing down a studio.” They won’t however be returning to the Louisville church gymnasium where they recorded 2011′s Circuital. “We always try to do something a little different each time and we did that last time,” James explained. “We have a couple top-of-the-heap places we’re in the process of deciding what will work best.”

James said he already has ideas for new songs, but added: “I don’t know if anything’s come together yet. I’ve got a lot of starting places, I guess you could say.”

While you wait for more, why not revisit our recent cover story on James.

Kanye West Launches Tirade at Paparazzi During Surprise Show...
May 16, 2013 4:46pm | The Daily Swarm

Kanye West made a surprise appearance at last night’s Adult Swim Upfront party, and took the opportunity to yell about the paparazzi and say that he “ain’t no motherfucking celebrity,” but is also “the worst kind of celebrity.” Via Yahoo!:

It’s likely that a recent incident in which West walked head first into a “Wrong Way” sign when paparazzi were following him and his lady love, Kim Kardashian, in Los Angeles, sparked the tirade.

“I’m a terrible, terrible, terrible celebrity. One thing about me. I

Gunplay
May 16, 2013 3:50pm | StereoGum

Gunplay, Maybach Music’s resident knuckle-throwing knucklehead, is both one of the most fearsomely unhinged rappers on the current rap landscape and straight-up one of the most gifted rappers out right now. One of the man’s crowning achievements is “Bible On The Dash,” a track from last year’s 601 & Snort mixtape that gives some emotive context to all the fire-breathing that Gunplay does on other tracks. It’s now got a video, one that Gunplay co-directed with Ryan Snyder, and it’s mostly shots of Gunplay driving around and looking contemplative. Watch it below.
