Diamond Terrifier celebrating Terrible Records release w/ labelmate Kirin J Callinan, Amen Dunes & more (free show tonight)
May 20, 2013 2:48pm | Brooklyn Vegan

Kirin J Callinan at BV-CMJ 2012 (more by Nate "Igor" Smith)

Kirin J Callinan, who played 285 Kent and a private show last week, and who will be back next month while on tour with Ariel Pink, has added a FREE last minute Brooklyn show at Public Assembly tonight (5/20) with Diamond Terrifier, Amen Dunes (who played our show at Knitting Factory last week - photos HERE and HERE), Uumans, and more.

The Public Assembly show may be the first time Callinan and Diamond Terrifier aka Sam Hillmer (aka Zs) will be performing as labelmates. DT recently signed to the label co-run by a member of Grizzly Bear, as we briefly mentioned before. The show is the record release party for DT's The Subtle Body Wears A Shadow, due on May 28. Kirin's debut album Embracism is due out July 2nd via Terrible Records in partnership with XL Recordings.

Videos for Diamond Terrifier's "Triple Gem" (which we premiered) and Kirin J Callnin's NSFW "Embracism," as well as the show flyer are below.

oOoOO releasing debut LP -- song streams & updated dates (win tix to the Glasslands show!)
May 20, 2013 2:40pm | Brooklyn Vegan

by Andrew Sacher

San Francisco producer oOoOO has put out a few solid EPs on the Tri Angle label over the past couple of years, and now he's finally set to release his debut full length, which is called Without Your Love. The album will come out on June 24 via his own label which is called Nihjgt Feelings, and no, that wasn't a typo. oOoOO has released two singles from the album so far, including the super-dark "Mouchette" and "Stay Here," which features some auto-tuned R&B vocals from ML. Check those out, along with the album art and tracklist, below.

As mentioned, oOoOO will be going on a tour with Groundislava, and though that tour doesn't hit NYC, both artists will play their own shows at Brooklyn venue Glasslands before the tour begins. oOoOO's show is a previously discussed date happening on May 23 with Selebrities and Dark Sister. Tickets for that show are still available and we're also giving away a pair. Details on how to enter to win tickets are below.

Groundislava's Glasslands show is a previously discussed date happening exactly a week later on May 30 with Fur and Time Wharp. Tickets for that show are still available too.

In related news, we recently posted pictures and a video from oOoOO collaborator Butterclock on BV Chicago.

All dates are listed, along with those song streams and album info, belo...

Michael Gira
May 20, 2013 2:39pm | Fact Magazine

Get your earplugs ready.

Last year’s full-length The Seer was a brilliant and succinct culmination of the Swans catalogue to date, and stood as one of the finest albums of 2013. It’s only right then that the album should get a proper tour, and Michael Gira’s boys are due to traipse through the US and Europe from now until the end of the summer.

For those Swans fans who want to see something a little different, Sacred Bones’ Pharmakon will be supporting the band on their Iowa, Kentucky, Ohio and Buffalo, New York dates bringing her particular brand of gruesome, overdriven noise to the party. [via Pitchfork]

Where's Kevin Bacon When You Need Him? Japan's Anti-Dance Laws Are Ridiculous...
May 20, 2013 2:33pm | The Daily Swarm

Japan’s laws governing “adult entertainment” are squeezing the life out of Osaka’s club scene. Venues must close by midnight or 1 AM, provide an impossible amount of square footage on the dance floor, and apply for a license if they wish to host events where people will dance. We’ve seen this before in Footloose, so we know there’s hope. Via The Guardian:

On a recent trip to Osaka I spoke to the owner of Noon nightclub, Masatoshi Kanemitsu, in Amemura. Last April he and seven members of staff were arrested by police and held for 22 days because 11 people were dancing in his club. His bank accounts were investigated and police looked for links between himself and Yakuza (Japanese gangsters), which simply didn’t exist. Similar raids have taken place in Amemura since 2010 and in the aftermath many establishments have been forced to close. Noon just about manages to carry on but, like in many of Osaka’s nightclubs, now patrons know that dancing is strictly prohibited.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Flaming Lips, The Darkness @ Great Googa Mooga

The Great Googa Mooga took over Brooklyn’s Prospect Park on Friday night, and though the food and music festival did battle with the forces of nature on Sunday, the Friday night festivities were considerably calmer. Well, actually, with a lineup built around the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Flaming Lips and the Darkness things couldn’t get too calm. Each band brought a distinct sense of style to the event: Wayne Coyne wore a cool turquoise jacket, Justin Hawkins busted out of a striped jumpsuit and Karen O sported a killer box hat. Action Bronson
May 20, 2013 2:26pm | StereoGum

The great Queens rap redbeard Action Bronson is working on a full-length mixtape with the New York producer Harry Fraud, and the pair let one go earlier this year when they posted “Strictly 4 My Jeeps” online. In the track’s brand-new video, from director Jason Goldwatch, Bronson takes us to a cartoonish Queens universe and shows us that he knows how to drain jump shots, prepare feasts, and turn cartwheels. The video also has a whole lot of unnecessary fat-people humor and a truly necessary Riff Raff appearance. Watch it below.

Stream Cage the Elephant offshoot Plastic Visions
May 20, 2013 2:25pm | Cosequence Of Sound

Kentucky grunge-punk outfit Cage the Elephant is something of a family affair, with brothers Matt and Brad Shultz handling lead vocals and rhythm guitar, respectively. For his latest project, Brad Shultz continues to keep it right in the family, enlisting his cousin and budding vocalist Kane Stewart for a group called Plastic Visions.

The story goes that Stewart had been reluctantly running his family business, the California surf megastore Stewart Surfboards. Looking to escape his tedious day job, Stewart abruptly moved to Nashville, where the duo recently spent a month in the studio combining elements of punk/hardcore with surf and skate-grunge. The end result is the band’s debut self-titled EP, due out May 21st via Brad’s label Death Panda.

The five-track effort is, pardon the pun, a more frenetic and grimier cousin to CTE’s reckless and disheveled brand of rock and roll. Like a rocket-powered surf board, “Love Hate” blasts forward with thick, pulsating guitars and waves of noisy effects piggybacking off Stewart’s hoarse yelps. “Now I Know” condenses the dissonance into random interludes, making the quieter parts more poppy and the rest a raging mess of unceasing, feedback-powered anarchy. Strap in and listen below. (We suggest doing so with your own beloved blood relative).

Tame Impala Bassist Takes 'Lonerism' to Heart, Leaves Band...
May 20, 2013 2:15pm | The Daily Swarm

Tame Impala bassist Nick Allbrook has left the band to focus on his other musical projects. The split wasn’t your traditional hate-spewing war of words, as Allbrook and the other members are separating on good terms. Allbrook will be replaced by Cam Avery who plays in POND – the psychedelia-tinged project of Allbrook. He is also founder of The Growls, a band that has frequently opened for Tame Impala on tour. In other words: they’re keeping it all in the family and they still love each other. Awww! Via Paste:

If there were a way to make the June come any sooner, I’d do it in a heartbeat. In addition to the promise of perfect weather, the month heralds http://www.cmj.com/artists/Smith-Westerns/"target="_blank"> Smith Westerns’ new album Soft Will, the follow-up to 2011′s Dye It Blonde, out via Mom + Pop on June 25. For those of us who can’t wait till then, the group has released a warm and dreamy track, 3am Spiritual.

Packed with calming guitars, playful synths and airy vocals, the song is fitting for those turbulent summer nights when you just can’t fall asleep. Cullen Omori’s youthful, pleading croon seems like a more effective lullaby than infinite sheep-counting. In support of the upcoming album, the band will be embarking on a North American tour this July. Check out the tour dates, and the wonderful “3am Spiritual,” below.
