DiS Does Singles 20.05.13: Paramore, Laura Marling, The Replacements
May 20, 2013 4:12am | Drowned In Sound

Hello. It's time to repress your debauched memories of the last few days and settle down for a brand new edition of DiS Does Singles.

This week Camera Obscura have penned a royally good track about unrequited affection, Laura Marling has harked back to her new folk guise with a Bruce Springsteen cover and Books Of Love are here with their first ever single of winsome retromania.

Also, Paramore have scooped Single of the Week. I apologise for nothing.

Single of the Week

Paramore - Still Into You (Atlantic)

Look officer, I know what this looks like and frankly I don't give a damn. 'Still Into You' graduated from the same irresistible school of upbeat pop as Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' and Robbie Williams' 'Candy'. It's relentlessly positive, unerringly infectious and too joyous to comprehend without the use of an exclamation mark!

By virtue of having a Hayley Willliams, Paramore have always been a different proposition to their emo contemporaries. Lacking the pomp of Fall Out Boy or the ceremony of My Chemical Romance, they trained their tunnel vision on conquering the world

Splashh - Comfort
May 20, 2013 3:51am | Drowned In Sound

"I need a long vacation, some place to clear my mind" sings dreamy-voiced frontman Sasha Carlson on one of Comfort's many highlights. While not exactly conforming to the stereotypical slacker ideology, it could be consecrated as a statement of intent where Splashh are concerned. Formed in the early part of 2012 by Australian-born singer/guitarist Carlson and fellow antipodean guitar player Toto Vivian, they didn't even have a rhythm section prior to booking their first gig. Cue the subsequent recruitment of New Zealander Jacob Moore from The Checks on drums and Wolverhampton-born bass player Thomas Beal and voila - Splashh were borne. Since then, it's been something of a universally upward trajectory for the four-piece, whose reputation has continued to soar courtesy of three fine singles and a handful of free downloads via their website.

They're somewhat mistakenly described as grunge revivalists in some quarters; granted, Comfort opener 'Headspins' owes a small debt of gratitude to Nirvana's 'Sliver' in the same way Feeder's 'We Can't Rewind' does for example. But that's precisely where any similarity ends. Sure, there's little doubt a lot of Splashh's influences come from what many perceive to be the halcyon era of independent guitar music: 1987-1992. But rather than simply ape the obvious, there's a hell of a lot more thought gone into this record. So much more in fact. Listen again to 'Headspins' and there's middle ei...

Hear Todd Edwards
May 20, 2013 3:25am | Fact Magazine

As promised, New Jersey’s preeminent cut-up merchant took to the controls for this Saturday’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix.

The two-hour session is 90% Edwards originals and edits, and it’s stuffed to the brim with exclusives and eyebrow-raisers. Particularly notable are exclusive takes on Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’/'Something About Us’, Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ and a host of Giorgio Moroder originals. Other recipients of the Edwards touch include David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’, My Morning Jacket’s ‘Big Love’, LOL Boys’ ‘Changes’, Disclosure’s ‘White Noise’ and Jessie Ware’s ‘No To Love’.

Head here to stream the mix. The ‘Get Lucky’/'Something About Us’ edit is below.

Kanye names new album Yeezus, premieres new tracks, unveils possible cover art
May 20, 2013 3:07am | Fact Magazine

Prior to Saturday, all we knew about Kanye’s forthcoming sixth LP existed in the form of whispers and rumours. Not so come Monday.

On the weekend, Rap-Up speculated that the new album will be called Yeezus. Kanye’s girlfriend Kim Kardashian subsequently shared an Instagram image with the hashtag #Yeezus. The post also featured a snap of a CD, ostensibly featuring the cover art for the album. The image also cropped up on a pre-order page at KanyeWest.com, although it has now been removed – scroll down to view the frowzy artwork.

There was plenty of musical Yeezy activity on the weekend, with the rapper making his much-trailed appearance on Saturday Night Live to debut new tracks ‘Black Skinhead’ and the Frank Ocean-featuring ’New Slaves’. Strikingly, footage of the latter was also beamed onto buildings at 66 locations across the world. ‘Black Skinhead’ is a rabble-rousing glam/rap freakout, situated somewhere between Death Grips and T. Rex and carried by a sample of Marilyn Manson’s ‘The Beautiful People’ (lyrics here and here). ‘New Slaves’, meanwhile, is brittle and politically charged – videos of both are below.

Yeezus is expected on June 18. Rumoured contributors include Daft Punk...
