Ray Manzarek, the innovative keyboardist and a founding member of the Doors has died. He was 74. He died at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, from bile duct cancer – with family by his side. He will be sorely missed.

Manzarek and Jim Morrison met while studying film at UCLA in 1965. The two bonded over their passion of music and mysticism and formed a band. Though they used studio musicians to record their biggest hit – 1967’s “Light My Fire” – Manzarek would actually use a low-end keyboard when the band performed live. It just goes to show how instrumental Manzarek was in creating the Doors’ musical ethos. The Chicago-born Manzarek was the architect of the Doors’ jazz-inflected rock and for that, we salute you, Mr. Manzarek. Rest in peace. Via SPIN:

The Door’s catalog is filled with Manzarek’s intuitive, inimitable music. He could be menacing (“Waiting for the Sun”), playful (“Hello, I Love You”), or both (“L.A. Woman”). And after Morrison’s death in 1971, it was Manzarek who most aggressively kept the band’s legacy alive, shepherding out releases of the singer’s poetry set to new musical backings and, in 2002, forming the Doors of the 21st Century with Krieger and singer Ian Astbury of the Cult. (Densmore refused to participate in the pseudo-reunion.) In between thos...

A-Trak: Let's Talk About Drugs...
May 20, 2013 4:49pm | The Daily Swarm

FYI: MDMA is hot right now. The mainstream hip-hop culture has embraced the drug as a party starter. It almost seems like a requirement that at least one verse of any song must include some reference to molly. Promethazine cough syrup, also very “in” right now. But as much as this lifestyle is glorified – the consequences are many. Lil Wayne has been in and out of the hospital – claiming that it had nothing to do with the purple drank – and we lost Pimp C a few years ago. Also, apparently molly results in sweating profusely, according to Dr. Trinidad James. DJ A-Trak is fine with all the glamorizing of hip-hop’s drugs of choice, but he feels that we should at least have a conversation about it. Via The Huffington Post:

What worries me is the unspoken aspect of the story; that is the real elephant in the room. Just recently, Lil Wayne almost died from multiple seizures, yet he vehemently denies that there was a relation to his codeine intake. When legendary Houston rapper Pimp C passed away, the cause of death remained hush. Closer to home, my good friend DJ AM died from a drug overdose four years ago at the height of his fame. There needs to be more open dialogue about this. It won’t stop us from enjoying the music. A handful of rappers have spoken out: Kendrick Lamar ends his “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” video with a coffin lowered int...

May 20, 2013 4:34pm | Fact Magazine

The co-founder and keyboardist of The Doors dies at 74.

According to The Doors’ Facebook page, Manzarek died earlier today after a lengthy battle with bile cancer.

Manzarek is best known for his time with The Doors, a band he founded with Jim Morrison after a chance encounter in 1965. The Doors were one of the most controversial bands of the psychedelic era until Morrison’s death in 1971, with Manzarek’s signature sound provided by a Fender Rhodes piano and the Vox Continental combo organ.

After The Doors, Manzarek continued performing as a solo artist, with Nite City, and, beginning in 2002, with Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger. In lieu of flowers, his family is asking that donations be made to Standup 2 Cancer.

Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, RIP
May 20, 2013 4:29pm | Brooklyn Vegan

The man behind those iconic keys on The Doors classic records, Ray Manzarek, has passed away. From The Doors twitter:

...After a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek.
The man laid his keyboard and bass sounds (usually at the same time) to all of the band's LPs, as well as being a producer and writer for projects as wide-ranging as jazz LPs to Wierd Al Yankovic.

RIP Ray Manzarek, though your unique sound with The Doors will always signify some of the most important records of the era. Check out some classic songs by The Doors below.

That Moment When You Land Your Dream Interview With Prince...
May 20, 2013 4:26pm | The Daily Swarm

After decades of chasing the elusive Purple One, Jon Bream finally scored his dream interview. Prince isn’t punctual, nor is he even reliable. He doesn’t allow interviewers to write or record because he wants to have an honest conversation. There are a lot of hoops to jump through, but imagine the feeling of ecstasy that Bream felt when he finally got to speak with Prince. It’s a great read. Via Star Tribune:

Sometimes Prince set the agenda. He went into an extended commentary about young stars such as Justin Bieber lip-syncing in concert. He implored music critics to tell the truth about the lip syncers.

Throughout the chat, he muttered

Watch Swedish House Mafia
May 20, 2013 4:20pm | Cosequence Of Sound

When DJs Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso formed Swedish House Mafia in 2008, the first track they ever wrote together was “Leave The World Behind”. Having called it quits earlier this year with a monumental set at the Ultra Music Festival, the trio is bidding their super final adieu with a brand-new version of the track.

Featuring vocals from French singer Lune, the remake also comes paired with a music video as part of a collaboration with Volvo. In the clip, the threesome take the song’s title quite literally, leaving the world behind for picturesque mountains and ocean villas, each in their own Volvo XC 60. Watch it below.

The Volvo XC 60 is built in the style of Scandinavian simplicity, with a floating stack, accented leather interior, and folding rear seats for additional storage. It epitomizes Volvo’s new approach to design, combining the high waistline of the XC range and the sporty contour of the coupes for those with the most active of lifestyles. And for the music fan, the new Sensus Connected Touch allows users to connect to Spotify and play their favorite track just by just saying its name. For more on the XC 60, head to Volvo’s official website.

Liars @ The Met's Temple of Dendur, 5/17/2013

As mentioned, Liars were in town over the weekend for two shows. We already posted pictures from their Le Poisson Rouge show, but the main event this weekend was their performance on Saturday at the Temple of Dendur exhibit in The Met. Having the band play amongst Egyptian ruins as the windows darkened into dusk with projections behind them was, in the words of our photographer Amanda Hatfield, "nearly an hour of weird creepy awesomeness." Some might claim that sound was not ideal, but getting to see them in such a genuinely epic setting is certainly a fine tradeoff. Pictures from their performance are in this post.

The next show happening at Temple of Dendur is on July 19 when Om will play their track "At Giza," which is now sold out. More pictures from the Met below...

Joe Goddard
May 20, 2013 4:15pm | StereoGum

Following up his 2011 EP Gabriel, Joe Goddard of Hot Chip is slated to put out a follow-up called Taking Over some time this year. Its first offering is “She Burns” featuring English singer Mara Carlyle. Their union is an interesting one, as Carlyle is famous for her use of ukelele and a musical saw, but on top of Goddard’s disparate, laser-laden lounge licks, she sounds like the main performer at a cabaret on Mars. Get into the groove below.

Yahoo's Billion Dollar Deal for Tumblr...
May 20, 2013 4:11pm | The Daily Swarm

Yahoo has taken the big plunge and bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion dollars – all cash. CEO Marissa Mayer left Google 10 months ago to oversee the rebirth of the tired internet brand; focusing on the youth market to help Yahoo rebound. It’s a huge risk seeing as how it’s a big chunk of Yahoo’s remaining cash, but at least they have the good sense to let Tumblr operate independently. Via Billboard Biz:

Yahoo also says that “per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business” with David Karp staying on as CEO.

Tumblr, a service started six years by Karp, a high school dropout, now figures to play a pivotal role in Mayer’s attempt to reshape Yahoo. To take on the challenge, Mayer ended a highly successful 13-year career at Google, which she helped surpass Yahoo as the Internet’s most influential company. Since coming to Yahoo, Mayer has concentrated on improving employee morale, redesigning services and bringing in more engineering talent through a series of small acquisitions that have collectively cost less than $50 million.

But could the move alienate Tumblr’s devoted user base?

The deal could backfire though if Yahoo’s effort to make more money alienate a Tumblr user base that so far has been subjected to hardly ...

Premature Evaluation: Queens Of The Stone Age
May 20, 2013 4:09pm | StereoGum

Last June, we published a feature called the Top 20 Albums We’ve Been Waiting For Forever, counting down a bunch of our favorite artists from whom a new full-length was: (A) long overdue; and (B) not totally unrealistic. Coming in at No. 19 on that list was Queens Of The Stone Age. As we wrote in that space:
